Recommendations for WoW?

[personal profile] inkdust 2014-02-26 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm planning to try out WoW. Anyone have any recommendations for servers etc? Tips for choosing race & class for starting out? In the only other mmo I've played I was mainly a hunter/archer type. Anything good to know at the beginning?

What made you decide to play now? (Sorry, I have no advice, I haven't played in close to two years.)

google guides. "choosing a class" "choosing a race" and so on. there are tons out there with lots of actually useful info, that's how i started out. im super picky about my game play style so reading up a lot is the only way to go for me.

the hunter class is fun if you want to try that out again.

Can I ask why you decided to jump in now, when WoW is on its way out? Or is that way?

Oh? Is it really dying?

Last year they lost just over half their revenue in 7 months. The game has been around for a decade, the lion's share of the historical playerbase has moved on, the subscription model is effectively dead (and that's why Elder Scrolls Online is doomed -- well, that and it doesn't seem to be very good anyway) and the traditional MMO (which WoW exemplifies) is in decline in favour of hybrid games (such as F2P MMOFPS games like Team Fortress 2 or the vaporware Survarium) and MOBAs.

Meh. I expect it will hold steady at 6-7 million for quite a long time.

No it's not. EVERYONE thinks its about it about to die, but it keeps coming back. With Warlods of Drzaenor coming in and the creators mentioning more expacs in the future, yeah no. WoW is nowhere near dying.

You same damn people said the same thing about SWTOR, but it's raking in cash and still going.

I didn't really do any gaming until last year, so I never got into it before. When I found out I could try it for free I figured I might as well. I'm just looking for something entertaining, so I wasn't too concerned about current popularity. Is there something you would recommend instead?

Re: Recommendations for WoW?

Well, as I said to the anon above, the traditional MMO is on its way out.

It's not too late to get into WoW, but don't expect to spend a long time with it; I suspect they'll keep it going as long as it can until the hassle of running it begins to outstrip the profit. I really don't expect it to last more than a couple years -- even if they switch to microtransactions like they're talking about I think we're seeing the game's twilight years. It doesn't help that what's left of the fanbase, though very loyal, tends towards the creepy -- WoW at its peak had a very diverse playerbase, but as most of them have moved on, what's left tend to be the dregs. So be warned going in.

May I suggest Guild Wars? They're always having free trial periods so you could check it out free, and then it's just buy to play - no subscription. It's not a perfect game but I have a lot of fun with it.

Try for a high population server. Pick a normal (non PVE one). Choose whatever race you like the best (I am biased towards Horde). And a class. If you are used to hunters then I would suggest playing a hunter OR a warlock. My main is a lock so I can talk more about that.

I would suggest two gathering professions (mining/skinning/herbalism) to help make money.

If there are any LGBT servers, go for that -- they tend to police their shitheads a lot more than other servers.

Unless you love Player vs Player environments I would stay the hell away from the PvP servers, I imagine at max level(and in the best PvP gear) they aren't so bad, but while you're leveling it's not fun getting killed by max-level players over and over again.

Hunters are a good choice of class if you want something familiar to start off with, they're relatively hardy too and are pretty user-friendly.

Personally I love playing Night Elves, Draenei, and Worgen on Alliance and Blood Elves, Trolls, and Goblins on Horde. Also Pandaren as well but you can choose which side they go to. But you may very well have a different preference, I'd suggest playing around with the character creator for a bit and finding a race/class combination that appeals to you.

Unless you want to play PVP, I'd recommend Proudmoore. It's the LGBT server on the American/Oceanic side servers, which [as Deathtoll [sp?] mentioned] means that jackasses tend to be slapped down and policed more than on other servers.

Alternatively, if you're interested in RP at all, Wyrmrest Accord. My gfs and I play there primarily; one of my gfs actually rolled on Proudmoore and was shocked at the amount of anti-LGBT she saw in the chat channels. On WrA, we are able to keep trade and other channels (on Proudmoore, she had to turn all channels including /say off in the cities) on because if someone is a douche people WILL stand up to the jerks. I don't know if Proudmoore gets enough trolls that they just ignore it, or what, but it really soured her on the server. :(

I played a troll hunter and loved it. Trolls are both chill and badass (once u go troll u never reroll!) And when you're a hunter you have your very own personal tank. I had a raptor as a pet and gleefully shot things full of arrows as she clawed my enemies in the face. Also our armor is pretty cool and we can lay traps which is rad!

I'm late, but I play hunter on a fairly low populated PVP server and I prefer that, it isn't like it is completely dead, but it isn't overrun either, which means less getting killed by the other side, but you are not alone.

I would join a guild as quickly as possible, usually someone asks you to join one when you start out, just accept them a guild is pretty much a guild, especially in the beginning. Being in a guild makes you level a bit quicker among other things.

Get at least one gathering profession, I prefer skinning as there is basically no effort in it.

Remember to actually level up first aid and cooking, because it will make life easier, in the same vein Fishing, because you can use the fish in cooking so.

Race wise if you pick hunter, being a dranei on the Alliance side ( or whichever race is the same on the Horde side) is pretty good in the low levels as you get a healing spell being a dranei, other than that the race perks are noted when you are choosing a player so you will find what you think fits you.

I am in Europe and as such on an European server, but I don't ever have any issues with meanness in the game. Except once in a while in battlegrounds, but that is more a general "why do all of you suck so much" and my favorite insult of all when everyone is lvl 90 "You are all a bunch of noobs", and some insults that aren't really that nice, but not the end of the world. Mostly I just ignore it. If it is anything aimed at you, you can easily just block that player and never hear from them again.

I think that was all? If you have any questions just PM me and I shall try to answer, and if I can't I will ask my friend who is a walking WoW dictionary and she will probably have an answer.

I'll nth Proudmoore. I just rerolled there, since my server I've been on since it went live is now deader than a doornail.

I've been playing since 2005, no breaks at all, and I still love the game.

A great resource if you're new is the New Players forum:
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/1011644/

There's even a sticky there where you can fill out questions and those of us who hang out in there can help direct you toward a class (though if you've played a hunter/archer class in other MMOs, and don't mind a pet, they're a class that is easy to play, but more difficult to master, in my opinion).

My advice? Have fun. Mess around. There's nothing you can't undo, so you really can't permanently mess up. If you decide to go beyond the trial, I like recommending you take two gathering professions (such as herbalism, skinning, or mining) because then you can sell the materials to higher level players at auction, which can net you the gold you'll need for mount training, etc.

Yes, the population has declined, but Blizzard is currently consolidating servers, so it's really not an issue. You can also queue for things like dungeons, battlegrounds, and raids. The system will match you with other players from ALL realms, not just the one you're on.

Try it out, and have fun!

DO NOT DO AREA 52. Unless you wanna play Horde. Cause it's a giant Horde sever.

And if you ever do that server, stay out of the My Last Trick guild. It's an Alliance guild with a GM who demands you do shit for him cause he's a lazy fucker. Forces you to group with him without telling you why and when you question him and don't get an abbreviation (i'm still new to some of the abbreviations myself and and have been playing a year now), he kicks you out and ignores you.

Otherwise...just have fun and don't let the dungeon groups get to you too much. Some tanks are dicks, some of the DPSers are dicks, but either leave the instance and wait for cool down and try again or just hussle through.

Also, if you see a group of Horde/Alliance people killing NPcs in an area who are "??" higher in lvl than you, just leave and come back a few hours later. They like to camp out, bastards.

edit: If you like hunters and the like, then definitely choose that class. You get a pet!!

the caster classes are all fun and you usually get some kind of pet. Mages can get elementals, Shamans have totems/elementals, Warlocks get demons/void walkers/etc, Death Knights get ghouls. They're fun. But try what you're used to first (archers/hunters) then branch out once you get the lay of the land.
