I think GRRM originally intended for R+L=J. But I think that now, after everyone and their grandmother, has heard that theory and the evidence for/against, that he won't do it, just to be spiteful, really.

I can very much see that - to the point he might troll it a bit by adding in more tidbits about how its plausible before spinning wildly away in a 'nope! This is the truth!'

And either its going to be Ned did have a kid out of wedlock or maybe he found out his elder brother did and couldn't abandon him.

Or just *SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER*

actually killing Jon off and just never answering one way or another who his parents were.

Eh, they still could by way of Howland Reed.

That only works if you actually believe Jon is dead. Which I don't.

I think he IS dead....but I also think Mel's gonna bring him back. When Jon got Caesar'd, all of a sudden her staying behind when Stannis left the Wall finally made sense. We know red priests have that power AND we know that Jon can warg into Ghost too, so it's not that he's NOT dead but it's not in the final and forever way that death usually works

He's said in interviews he wouldn't change something just because the fans figured it out.

People lie. If there's one thing that media has taught me it's that creators lie a lot.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I have a very low opinion of people who change planned stories because "oh noes! people guessed!".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a very high opinion of GRRM. (I don't hate him, or anything. I just don't think he's as completely amazing as some fans do.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
So do I, but I don't think that's the case with GRRM. I also don't think his storytelling is primarily guided by the desire to subvert every possible trope and surprise readers at every turn. Some things are probably going to play out the way most fans expect they will, and that's fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of his portrayals of this world are pretty typical anyway. I mean, sure, he was someone who avoided the "journey and collection" trope of fantasy very well, but as far as his depiction of a medieval type world goes, it's pretty par for the course.
