I think GRRM originally intended for R+L=J. But I think that now, after everyone and their grandmother, has heard that theory and the evidence for/against, that he won't do it, just to be spiteful, really.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I can very much see that - to the point he might troll it a bit by adding in more tidbits about how its plausible before spinning wildly away in a 'nope! This is the truth!'

And either its going to be Ned did have a kid out of wedlock or maybe he found out his elder brother did and couldn't abandon him.

Or just *SPOILERSPOILERSPOILER*

actually killing Jon off and just never answering one way or another who his parents were.

Imo, the evidence is SO strong in favor of R+L=J that any thing else would feel like GRRM pulled it out of his ass.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
You see, people saying things like what you just said is why people like OP want it not to be true.

See, it's weird for me to hear that, because I always assumed it was pretty obvious that Jon was the actual Aegon Targaryen, and the "lost prince" last seen bumming around on a raft is another decoy from a game of Three-Baby Monte not unlike the one at the beginning of Good Omens. Heck, I assumed that Aegon only got introduced because too many people were figuring out that Jon was obviously Aegon and GRRM wanted to preserve some surprise.

So I guess different stuff seems obvious to different folks? :)

Robert was a pig, no doubt about that, but how was Ned supposed to do anything about it? I thought that after Robert's Rebellion he buggered off to Winterfell again, and only met Robert again during the Greyjoy rebellion?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Is the R+L that OP is talking about Robert+Lyanna or Rhaegar+Lyanna? Because I've heard the Rhaegar+Lyanna theory, but not the other one.

When people say R+L, they usually mean Rhaegar. I've certainly never seen it used for Robert. Because Robert is not a common suggestion, I would think anyone who thought Robert is Jon's father would specify that.

I'm not particularly fond of the ship*, but I think it's so overwhelmingly likely it's as good as true. I can't really take anyone seriously whose theories don't include L + R = J.

*I like what it means for Ned's character arc, but not what it most certainly means for Jon's.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Could someone explain the math?

R is ... Robert Baratheon?
L is ... Caitlin's sister who died?
J is ... Joffrey?

(So then what does Robb Snow have to do with the secret? I don't even.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Robb Snow?
R = Rhaegar, Daenerys's older brother who was killed by Robert
L = Lyanna, Ned's sister, whom Robert loved (Catelyn's sister is called Lysa)
J = Jon Snow

I hate Robert, but it's not like Rhaegar isn't also a douche. The guy hit on Lyanna and practically stole her away right in front of his own wife and left Elia to get raped to death by Gregor. Also, isn't the series extremely vague on how consensual Rhaegar/Lyanna was to begin with?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Rhaegar is the worst. I mean, he couldn't know what would happen to Elia, but even so - hitting on another woman in front of his wife and THE ENTIRE KINGDOM, thereby publically humiliating his wife, not to mention both the family and the fiancé of the girl he was hitting on? And in the best case scenario he continued with running off with said girl, which makes him an irresponsible douchebag. So even if he isn't a kidnapping rapist, he's still a piece of shit. I don't know why people romanticize him so.

Let's see... In the first book, Robert is the one who mentions Lyanna being raped by Rhaegar. I'm assuming Robert legitimately believes that to be true (and no doubt served as motive for killing Rhaegar at the Trident beyond the civil war); he has no reason to lie to Ned or twist facts to assert his legitimacy as king. Ned doesn't confirm or deny it, and the rest of his POV chapters only show that he feels extremely guilty over her death for reasons deeper than just the loss of his sibling. Aside from the obvious betrayal of Catelyn by passing off Jon as his, perhaps because his father and brother Brandon were captured and then died because they had rode south after Lyanna?

Given how wild and headstrong Lyanna is described to have been, I think she went to Dorne with Rhaegar and conceived Jon consensually. And yes, even if it was completely consensual, Rhaegar is a douche and it's not like Lyanna comes out looking the best either. It seems like a really unwise move for the heir defending his family's dynasty, prophecy or no prophecy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
I just hope that if it is true - that it isn't portrayed as twu luv. The ways some of the fans of the theory talk about it, it should be all sunshine and roses. Which doesn't suit the series...but also, given how god awful it turned out for everyone else in the series - R+L *should* be terrible. Rhaegar really does seem like a moron...even if everyone in the books talks about how awesome he is.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So everyone talks how awesome Rhaegar is and it's completely possible that he fell in love with Lyanna (mutually) and they ran away together (love rarely looks at arranged marriages when it happens) and they made unwise decisions because of it, so... it should be "terrible"?

I honestly was just thinking about making a secret about the R+L=J theory so I'm kinda happy someone else did. I think R+L=J makes sense but a big part of really doesn't want it to be true. It just seems so sad to me, considering all the Stark siblings angst, to then turn Jon into just a Targaryen cousin. Although actually Ned breaking his vows and getting another woman pregnant makes me sad too, because of Catelyn. I'd take Jon's parents being Lyanna and Brandon, or Lyanna and Arthur Dayne, or even Brandon and some random woman, over Rhaegar and Lyanna. But I'm pretty resigned to the fact that R+L=J will be canon. I just hope Rhaegar and Lyanna's relationship isn't described as 'true love soulmates' because Elia and Rhaegar's children suffered so much because of Rhaegar's plan.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
I agree so much. Some of the R+L=J people are such obnoxious douchebags about it that I just want them to get slapped in the face with "lol no Jon is actually Ned's son." I hate how so many people treat it like it's canon when, like you said, it's just a theory.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I hope Jon isn't Lyanna's son so the shine comes off Ned Stark's halo. People want to believe he was protecting his dead sister's child because it makes him so noble. I'd find it more interesting if Jon really was his illegitimate son and he fucked up and unintentionally inflicted more emotional anguish on both Jon and Cat by keeping the identity of Jon's mother a secret to "preserve her honor" or some such bullshit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Is that's true, then what was Ned's promise and why were the Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy? For that matter, why was Lyanna there and how exactly did she die, if not in childbirth? I'm not trying to be antagonistic, I'm legitimately curious to what your theory would be. Because yes, R+L=J is a theory too.
