i'm struggling to understand how you can be withdrawn and careful and straightforward at the same time

I think by straightforward the OP means 'doesn't engage in verbal trickery/mischief', not direct or blunt?

How does being straightforward mean you can't be careful and/or withdrawn? It's not exactly an opposing characteristic for either.

I can see it re withdrawn, but careful? In my mind they're pretty much opposite

I don't see them as incompatible traits. I think someone can be wary and self-isolating but when they interact with others they're straightforward about things.

I think by 'straightforward' they mean 'uncomplicated/unclever', not emotionally honest and open or whatever. Not a tricky perceptive liar doing things for complicated reasons. If that makes any more sense.

It does, thank for the explanation. Sometimes I forget that my knowledge of the English language isn't as good as a native's :(

TBF I think OP was using it in a somewhat unusual / uncommon way.

Not OP, but I don't talk much (withdrawn), I don't lie or dance around topics (straightforward), and while telling the truth, I try to be as polite and inoffensive as possible (careful.) It's a combination that tends to surprise people, but it causes a lot less offense than is typical for straightforward people.
