i'm struggling to understand how you can be withdrawn and careful and straightforward at the same time

[personal profile] applemagpie 2014-03-01 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I think by straightforward the OP means 'doesn't engage in verbal trickery/mischief', not direct or blunt?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
How does being straightforward mean you can't be careful and/or withdrawn? It's not exactly an opposing characteristic for either.

I don't see them as incompatible traits. I think someone can be wary and self-isolating but when they interact with others they're straightforward about things.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think by 'straightforward' they mean 'uncomplicated/unclever', not emotionally honest and open or whatever. Not a tricky perceptive liar doing things for complicated reasons. If that makes any more sense.

Not OP, but I don't talk much (withdrawn), I don't lie or dance around topics (straightforward), and while telling the truth, I try to be as polite and inoffensive as possible (careful.) It's a combination that tends to surprise people, but it causes a lot less offense than is typical for straightforward people.

I felt the same way when I saw the three part season 1 finale of The Avengers: Earth's Mightest Heroes where Loki was the main villian of it. I was like, oh, he's just kind of being generically evil :\. I honestly thought the two and three parts prior to that would have made better season finales than the Asgard/Loki one.

Loki is frequently written terribly in fanfic. It's incredibly hard to find fic where he resembles the MCU version at all, and a good deal of it just woobifies him beyond recognition.
applemagpie: (Ami/Mako)

[personal profile] applemagpie 2014-03-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Loki isn't admittedly one of my favourite characters, but his characterization is still one of the things I found most disappointing about the MCU/Thor fandom. Literally no fun to his character at all. Just fic with him being misunderstood or bitter, and angsty, even by authors I considered to be very good. I mean I get that he was bitter, but what about his genuine villainous love of being a dick, giving himself power trips, and causing trouble?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
For various reasons, Loki gets woobified more than any other character in MCU canon, and in a fandom that often includes a) Tony Stark, played by b) RDJ's kicked puppy face, that's really saying something. There is a crazy amount of over-identification with Loki's outcast/loner/bullied child aspects that completely ignore the fact that his response to said bullying was, ya know, mass murder, often of people with little or nothing to do with his shitty home life.

Also, fandom does love to woobify their broody, skinny dark-haired Brits with cheekbones beyond all recognition. MCU Loki never stood a chance.

There's very few times I've felt "yep, this is 100% MCU Loki" reading fic and don't get me wrong, I don't mean the writers are terrible it's just that I feel a big part of fanon Loki appears to be laying on thick the angst issues. I also don't like anything that uses said angst (which is somewhat legitimate) to gloss over the bad shit he's done (which generally isn't excusable.)

And that is why I have a massive issue with anything that involves him joining the Avengers. I can suspend my disbelief for the purpose of enjoying a pairing I'm drawn to but as things stand I don't believe it could actually happen in the MCU.

Anyway, he can definitely be angsty AND still be recklessly mischievous.

Recs?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any fics people can think of that DID get Loki close-to-right, in their opinion?

Anything by astolat, imho. Particularly "revelations" and "prince" (although thats an AU)

Loki's personality seems like it's hard to pin down, especially for fic writers.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
You might be picky, but I feel that this is a legit complaint of Marvel Loki fandom. I gave up on fanfic Loki a long time ago.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
+1

The fandom just has a really hard time portraying Loki in a way that isn't OOC and dramatic. Tony Stark gets a lot of the same treatment, though, because that's the problem with being the fan favorite characters.

I really liked Calculator, by katsu! But as of the release of TDW, the characterization comes off as a little too manic and not cruel and embittered enough.

Bonus points for the best mimicry of Terry Pratchett's writing style I've ever seen in fic, though.

Having standards =/= Picky

I love Loki, too, but there's a reason I don't read Loki fic. I'm sure there are a few good gems, but I am barely willing to wade through the fandom average of 10 bad fics for 1 good one, I'm not going to deal with the Loki fandom's 50:1 (and even that comes after taking out Thor/Loki).

He is a great character, which makes him popular. It's that popularity that's working against so many of us right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not in this fandom, but if you're new to fanfic in general, my experience (in all of the three main fandoms and the many small ones I've read from) is that you sometimes have to wade through a LEGION of dissatisfying fics (not necessarily even *bad* ones, though many can be) before you can find something that really hits just the right notes for you. But when you find that shining gem, it's actually worth it, if you really love that character.

(Also in my experience it's a bit dangerous to discuss being dissatisfied with fic offerings for any reason; readers shouldn't presume to be 'entitled', hence anon reply.) :/

I have to say that a part of the problem might be the fact that, for example, in Thor no.1 and Avengers I didn't really see that much of "reckless joy in mischief" in Loki; especially the first Thor seems to be the blueprint for all the angst in the haracter and it /does/ lend itself to it. But I'm not a Loki fan, so...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since you seem new to the fic world I'm just going to tell you that we all have to wade through many, many fics that are not to our taste until we find something that is. Reccing lists can be of help, but not always.

But aside from that, yeah, IC is a really tricky thing to find because it all depends on character interpretation. I lol at all the people here complaining how no author can write Loki "right". You mean right by YOUR standards. I remember how, after the first movie, when we had all of those Evil!Odin fics and people kept complaining about how people vilify Odin, and that he won't disown his son and... Come Thor 2, and what do you know? That's exactly what happened.

It's fine to have standards and be picky, but I must admit I mentally stumbled a little when I got to the part about Loki being an avatar of the author. How do traits like emo, withdrawn, and straightforward make you think it must be self-inserts, instead of say, woobiefication of the character or something? I don't get it.

Anyway, my main point is that it's okay to have standards for what fic you like. I'm sure the majority of fic out there gets it wrong in some way or another, you're not a bad person for not liking that.
