It's fine to have standards and be picky, but I must admit I mentally stumbled a little when I got to the part about Loki being an avatar of the author. How do traits like emo, withdrawn, and straightforward make you think it must be self-inserts, instead of say, woobiefication of the character or something? I don't get it.

Anyway, my main point is that it's okay to have standards for what fic you like. I'm sure the majority of fic out there gets it wrong in some way or another, you're not a bad person for not liking that.

(OP) *shrug* It's the strong feeling I persistently get that the authors ~identify with the character, which tends towards your typical emo withdrawn/introverted thoughtful geek, rather than the gleeful charming impulsive trickster. That identification with the saddest little chibi in the room which I suppose is part of the appeal of woobiefication too.

Huh. I usually run across author-insert types that overplay traits like being a gleeful charming impulsive trickster, since that's the kind of person the author wishes they were rather than an emo introvert. I guess author fantasies run both ways.

I wish those people'd write Loki then, but the "Loki is nerdy and oppressed just like me" is too much of a drawcard for the id for those who do I suppose. Or so I speculate anyway.
