Depends. I think it is stupid for anyone to slap someone back in a "slap fight".

That being said, if the woman is being physically abusive the man has a right to defend himself. His best bet would be to try and restrain her or push her away. Slapping won't do all that much generally. A punch might stun them enough for you to try and get away.

Lazy attempt

Women are not universally helpless and unable to inflict real, physical harm, and men are not universally bigger and stronger. Woman-on-man domestic violence or abuse may not happen nearly as often as the reverse, but it does happen, and a woman can inflict serious injuries. A man has the right to defend himself. One of my guy friends in college was 5'3" and built like a twig. I towered over him, substantially outweighed him, and could literally have thrown him around the room bodily. If he were in a relationship with someone like me who became abusive, would he still not have the right to defend himself physically?

Abuse doesn't warrant abuse in return, but anyone should have the right to defend themselves, including with force if necessary.

Fuck that shit. Somebody slaps me around that isn't my mom when I was a stupid shit of a teen, they better be ready for a fight, regardless of race, gender or creed.

Pretty much agree with the above anon.

If a person is threatened and in a dangerous situation you do what you gotta do to get away.

But in a general non-life threatening or severe situation, I don't think it's appropriate to fight back with violence no matter the gender. Someone slaps you in the face then that person doesn't respect you and doesn't deserve your time or the minimal amount of energy even a return slap would require. Walk away.

Pretty much this. It's a slap, it's insulting but it's not threatening. Stay your hand and leave the person rather than escalate it into a real fight where someone can get physically hurt.

Speaking as someone that was in an abusive relationship, it's not as easy as that. I remember once she smacked me hard across the face and I turned to leave, which she took as such an insult that she grabbed me by my ponytail and swung my head into the wall. It wasn't a dangerous situation to start with, but it became one. I agree that using violence in response to violence is not a good answer, but sometimes you really do have to defend yourself-- I wish I had.

I'm really sorry you were in that situation Anon. But yeah, abusive relationship swings into different territory than a non-threatening situation where you would just walk away. It's a whole different situation and reactions and actions completely depend on the individual situaion. Walking away didn't work your yours, for others it might be a life saver. It's so so so hard to know what to do sometimes and anyone who has some sort of "this is what you must do" concrete answer is full of shit.

Again, sorry you were in that situation hopefully things are going great for you now.

Good point. It's never a great idea to turn your back on an attacker.
