If someone attacks you, it is acceptable to take whatever measures are necessary to defend yourself from harm, regardless of your gender or your attacker's. (Note that grossly disproportionate violence is not necessary to protect yourself from harm.) But slapping someone solely in retaliation for slapping you is childish and accomplishes nothing, so no, that would not be acceptable.

This is, of course, leaving aside consensual, negotiated BDSM scenarios in which the participants respect one another's desires, boundaries, and safety. Those are okay.

Yeah, this. If a man slaps a woman, I'd want her to disengage without further violence if she can and defend herself from further injury if she can't, not slap him back or kung-fu him through a window or some shit. Same if a woman slaps a man. Fighting just for the hell of it is only cute between little kids or in movies, not between adults who are capable of doing each other serious harm if things escalate.
