If it's required in order to defend yourself, sure.

If it's just in retaliation or some misguided belief in tit for tat, that's going to be a lot harder to argue. In the majority of cases, the woman is probably not going to be as physically powerful as the man. You do not get to retaliate against parties who are physically weaker than you, which is also why, if you are a man and the stronger person in the equation, you also shouldn't punch:

1) senior citizens of either gender
2) men who are younger and physically weaker than you
3) a disabled person whose disability makes them physically less capable than you
4) kids, no matter how awful or shitty they are
