I don't really get the idea that being asexual means you can't recognize when someone is attractive?

Although I see it more as aesthetic appreciation, I guess.

nayrt

It's a common misconception people hold. "How can you find someone attractive if you claim to be asexual????"

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
The same way I, as a heterosexual woman, can think that another woman is beautiful. It's an aesthetic.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. And people don't normally look at photos of attractive men or women, and immediately imagine having sex with them. Saying that is a standard response of someone who is not asexual, is not really accurate.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh no one is disagreeing? Anon was saying that a lot of people mistakenly (key word mistakenly) think that asexuals can't recognize attractiveness in people, when they can.

I don't get it either. Like. We have eyes.

Yes, I think it's more of an aesthetic appreciation too. At least for me. I can sometimes recognize "sexy" people. If they do it for me is an entirely different question.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I've always wondered that too. Like a straight man can't find another man objectively attractive without needing to make a commentary on his sexuality? Oddly, this doesn't seem to apply to women who find other women beautiful.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 10:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, actually almost every time I've had or heard conversations about finding men attractive or at least good-looking, straight men were peddling back saying "How could I tell if he looks good? I'm not gay".

It's call aesthetics, guys. A question of proportions and other things, meshed with personal taste. No need to feel threatened in your manliness when you're asked to contribute to a conversation about a man's looks.

You don't need to want to sex a building to say that some architecture piece looks awesome.

OP

Well I don't just find him objectively attractive. Like if we were in the same room I'd throw myself at his feet like he was a god. This isn't a feeling I have for other just "attractive" people.

I'm an asexual and I have never found anyone "attractive" (I see people as ugly/non-ugly and interesting/uninteresting, where "ugly" means "has obvious physical deformities, is morbidly obese, or has a really weird skin colour" and just about everyone is interesting), but I don't think it has anything to do with my sexuality. Yeah, this is a weird idea.

or has a really weird skin colour

Are we talking a really unhealthy looking skin color or, say, blue? Because if you're calling Nightcrawler ugly, we are going to have words.

(those words will be "nu-uh!")

No, only when it's unhealthy-looking. There isn't much chance that blue is going to look healthy on an actual living human being, but I'm absolutely fine with blue-, green-, or purple-skinned fictional humans. I actually like these designs a lot.

We are not going to have words, I fear :)
