Glasses/obesity making you an automatic social reject.

Seriously, I knew loads of kids in school who had glasses and/or were overweight, and they had plenty of friends. Sure, assholes made fun of them, but it wasn't like they were automatically at the bottom of the totem poll because of it.

Especially the glasses thing. I don't think I have ever seen someone made fun of for their glasses (no one ever made of me). I am sure it happens, but yeah it isn't an instant social reject card.

AYRT

I did know a girl in school who wore glasses and was a total cliche, so yeah, people at least mentioned it behind her back. And I knew another kid who had legit Steve Urkel glasses. But owning them alone wasn't the end of the world.

I got made fun of for my glasses exactly once in my entire life - right after I got them when I was in elementary school, someone called me "four-eyes" to try to antagonize me. Anyway, even at that age I just laughed, because weeeaaak.

I hate it when an actor is clearly quite attractive but the character is supposed to be mousey and plain because of glasses. (Cue the world's fastest makeover...)

I also hate how glasses are used as a universal sign of brainy-ness, but the characters consistently use glasses like they are farsighted (for reading and computer use) when they're really more likely to be nearsighted unless they are older. I am doing smarty-pants things! I will wear glasses now! Never mind that I never need to wear them while driving or watching TV!

Same with braces. Nobody ever made fun of my braces. One guy called me "metal mouth" in an improv skit, but I was in on the joke and thought it was hilarious. And one girl asked me for some elastics (because this guy liked to tie his hair in a bunch of little pigtails) and when I said I didn't have any she was like "BUT YOU HAVE BRACES." and I just opened my mouth to show her that I only had top braces. But other than that I mean. Some kids just had braces. Nobody cared.

I feel like more kids had braces, at least for some period of time, than those who didn't. I will totally acknowledge my privilege in this regard though, I went to Fancy School. I had a shit-ton of orthodontia and it was so not fun. But it wasn't something people would make fun of you for because like half the student body had braces too.

I hate that trope about the woman removing her glasses and suddenly turning into a sex symbol. Who, for some reason, doesn't need to wear glasses to see anymore.
