Tropes!!

What are your favorite and least favorite tropes in fic/film/tv/games/books?

In fic I love the "Character A pines for Character B and Character B pines for Character A and everyone knows is except for them."

In all media I hate anything involving long lost family members appearing that everyone thought was dead. This is especially annoying when the character not having any family is integral to the character's personality and plot lines. Teen Wolf.

Least favourite? Redemption equals death. I hate that shit. I hate when a clearly bad character manages to redeem themselves and then dies. It sends such an awful message.

I love all h/c tropes ever. Especially the "both character A and character B are stupidly oblivious to their awesome friendship until a thing happens". I could eat this with a spoon. And the Not Quite Dead trope.

I haaate Freudian villains and Moriarty-esque omnipotent antagonists who are not only omnipotent but also appear every-fucking-where. Both of these make me nope out of a work in no time at all.

I love love love love love Undercover as Couple/Pretending to be Married for rly important reasons (mostly in fics, though).

I loathe most love triangles.

Echoing dethtoll's redemption = death. One of my favorite tropes is reformed villainy and hero/villains working together against another villain, so redemption = death is completely counter-intuitive.

And then I also hate love triangles where it's obvious that A and B are going to be end game but C keeps getting pushed in FOR THE DRAMA.

Also love triangles that aren't really triangles because A was just talking about her dear long lost brother but B only hopped in halfway through the conversation and didn't stick around long enough to hear the full story so now - instead of just, you know talking about it, B takes it as a personal betrayal and OH THE DRAMA.

I have a lot of favorites, but the one that really comes to mind (due to the mentions of reformed villainy) are when a villain is bad, but not that bad and that other villain? Well, he/she just crossed a line, man and we're not going to stand for that. Then said villain teams up with the heroes to defeat the worse villain. (Maybe Villain #1 was just in it for the money or something and wasn't interested in being truly evil.) See: the gangsters fighting Nazis along side the cops/FBI in The Rocketeer and when child molesters get threatened with being raped/beat up by other inmates in prison in every cop show ever.

Least favorite is probably where everything would be cool with the characters' interpersonal relationships if they would JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER but instead there must be ~*drama*~. In other words, these people have no real problems with each other, they just think they do but refuse to bring up the subject. Worse if there are lots of misunderstandings and people make assumptions that are somewhat OOC or seem to suggest a lack of trust between people who really ought to trust each other quite a lot by now.

You know, I don't know if this is a trope necessarily, but I'm kind of tired of all disabled characters being disabled because of accidents. I'm not some weirdo who doesn't think that it can't count, or that the challenges aren't equal - I just don't understand why they never let a character have cereberal palsy or something something along those lines.

(And seriously, no offense if you're disabled because of an accident, I'm not trying to downplay it. It just bugs me that the representation isn't balanced.)

Glasses/obesity making you an automatic social reject.

Seriously, I knew loads of kids in school who had glasses and/or were overweight, and they had plenty of friends. Sure, assholes made fun of them, but it wasn't like they were automatically at the bottom of the totem poll because of it.

Love:

"Oh noes, I'm totally in love with my bff but I'm 100% sure he's totally straight! Allow me to make a fool out of myself for 5,000 words trying to deny/hide/control my lust and jealousy!"

Character A is hurt/in danger and Character B goes BAMF in A's defense and/or commits extravagant, Dickensian gestures of epic devotion and self-sacrifice for A.

"I hate you!" "I hate you too!" "Wait, actually, I love you!" "Oh fuck, me too!" "Let's make out!" "Hell yeah!"

All the exquisitely tragic character death fics.

Hate:

Fics where the characters stop caring about jobs or issues that were of central importance to them in the actual canon because they're too busy gazing into each other's eyes or being vomit-inducingly domestic in great detail.

Least fav: anything I have accidentally done in writing and later regretted.

(although I don't even pay attention to everything that's supposedly a "trope", so this is basically the worst answer ever)

Favorites: Lawful Evil, time travel, 3/4-girl ensembles

Least favorites: Most romcom tropes, Dead Guy Junior, Disability Superpower, keeping characters in the dark for the sake of pointless drama their own good.

Faves (which generally applies only to fanfic, which I read mostly as mental comfort food, so I'm not looking for anything fantastic):

H/C, especially where the hurt is insecurity/feeling unwanted (really most fics that deal with insecurity are great)
Mutual pining
Pretend relationships (which of course turn into real relationships)
Protectiveness/concern betraying a character's affections
You've got mail trope (characters fall in love with each other twice, not realizing it. drama, then joy.)
(embarrassingly, but I justify it because I worked in a particularly shitty one) coffee shop AUs
professor/researcher AUs

(... basically the tropier the better.)

Strong dislikes:

Unrequited love
Character death
Kid fic

Love h/c, friends first, fake boyfriends

Loathe love triangles, miscommunication leading to unnecessary angst and the long lost relative thing. I ended up liking Cora but this new reveal that Peter has a kid is such bullshit.

not sure what tropes I hate most. There are several but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

Defective Detective, although I like subversions and aversions even more (ie, well-adjusted detectives like Foyle)

Knight in Sour Armor / Stepford Snarker

Badass old people

Sinister Minister

Rage Within The Machine / Underground Railroad plots

Least Favorite:
What's it called, something like Sorry You Don't Have Legs, Billy? Also ~Inspirational Disabilities~. My favorite use of this trope is The Cripple of Inishmaan because it's a huge deconstruction of SO MANY disability tropes. I fucking love Martin McDonagh.

Eye Scream. Nope. Nope nope nope, injury to eye is my #1 squick/fear.

I love it when characters really, really care about each other and would never admit it because they're enemies/rivals/supposed to hate each other for whatever reason. It's good with shipping but I love it most for friendship (which is why I usually end up friendshipping all of fandom's favorite Foe Yay pairings, but oh well).

Lots of h/c tropes too - especially when it's the aforementioned characters who won't admit how much they mean to each other. One getting hurt and the other having to protect or take care of them? Yes please.

Tropes I DON'T like - most love triangles (especially when shoehorned into fic for fandoms that do not actually have love triangles - pet peeve), and a lot of romance fanfiction tropes which shoehorn perfectly good characters into cliche roles. Ugh.

I love fics where Character A and Character B are both pining for each other and afraid to say anything.

What I am really tired of is "Wait, I thought I was straight? But I like a boy??? COULD I BE GAY?" angst.

Any kidfic trope pretty much i love. Character forced to grow up when suddenly given responsibility of a kid is a fave, as is 'big tough dude tenderly caring for baby' (the pacifier KILLED me, as did that ep of H50)...and kiddified main characters with bad childhoods where their team/friends try and give them a better second go-round. I also looove forced/arranged/contract marriages where the couple learn to live together and love each other. (Yay for kdramas using this trope often enough that theres some good ones out there!)

For dislike...forced misunderstandings. Just, all of the false conflict. Ick.

My heart dances for "I'm hopelessly in love with my best friend but s/he is never going to feel the same way so I won't say anything, but I'll keep being his/her friend because s/he is awesome and deserves awesome friends, and eventually I'll get over the 'hopelessly in love' thing, right? Right?" Ideally this is eventually followed by an accidental True Feelings reveal and "I never thought about you that way, but now that the idea is in my head let's see where this goes."

There are a lot of tropes I hate, but the one that gets my back up the most for its sheer inescapability is the temporary love interest so TPTB can have romance/sex on the show while still dragging out the UST between the obvioulsy-destined-for-each-other leads.

I honestly can't think of any tropes I like. Unless they're averted or subverted or even lampshaded (e.g. GRRM making his "Lady Of War" actually ugly and a source of ridicule for the knights, exposing their "chivalry" for what it is - sexism, or IW's nod to the too frequent helicopter crashes in their genre with the glorious fakeout in MW3 - I laughed out loud when the pilot gets it back under control and you fly calmly away), I loathe it when tropes show up in fiction to the point of avoiding or dropping works too riddled with them.

Tropes I particularly hate and will drive me away from a show or book or game immediately? Fridging. Love triangles. Will they/Won't they. Minority Feisty. Age gaps that only run in one direction. Bedroom roles define out of bedroom personalities. Rape As Backstory/Drama (rape can happen, but it serves a purpose besides making shit Darker And Edgier, and it does not increase a character's Power Levels). Faux Action Girls. I forget what it's called, but when a character clearly speaks for the author on an issue.

...And many, many more. But those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

This isn't exactly a trope per se, but I loveloveLOVE bizarrchitecture. Also dysfunctional families whose members, when taken individually, are relatively sane and who acknowledge how messed-up their home life is (Gallaghers, Tenenbaums, Elrics, et cetera).

Tropes I dislike: "I don't want kids! I don't want relationships! Work is life! Oh, but now that I've met YOU all I want to do is fuck and breed!" ESPECIALLY when followed up by conveniently-disappearing family members (I'm looking in your direction, BONES and HOUSE.)

Highly intelligent people who have the common sense of a shoelace.

Again not so much a trope: everyone disabled wants to be healed or "made better."
