Re: Tropes!!

You know, I don't know if this is a trope necessarily, but I'm kind of tired of all disabled characters being disabled because of accidents. I'm not some weirdo who doesn't think that it can't count, or that the challenges aren't equal - I just don't understand why they never let a character have cereberal palsy or something something along those lines.

(And seriously, no offense if you're disabled because of an accident, I'm not trying to downplay it. It just bugs me that the representation isn't balanced.)

Hm, do you mean primarily physical disabilities? The only character I can think of is the son from Breaking Bad (he has cerebral palsy).

Yeah - a character will be in a wheelchair, and most of the time it'll be because of an accident.

What about because of a crime or assault? Barbara Gordon was in a wheelchair for 20 years because the Joker shot her, and the incident informed a lot of her characterization. Is that different from an accident?

I guess my point was really just that I don't know why characters can't have been born with their disabilities more often.

Yeah I got that, was just playing devil's advocate. :)

(That and Babs is a personal favourite character of mine.)

I would add Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender, who was born blind. (We are counting blindness as a physical disability, yeah?)

Thiiiiiiisssssssssss sosososo much this I cannot begin to tell you.

The flip side of this particularly distorted coin is when there a "special needs kid" half the time it's Munchausen by Author Proxy syndrome all up in the thing. Ew. No.

Wait, do you mean the character is faking it, or that the disabled character exists only to bring attention to an issue? Both are icky, for sure.

And also, when "special needs" characters are supposed to bring a tear to the eye. Unfortunately this happens IRL too though...

AYRT

I've only seen the latter but the former would have me hitting Back like it was on fire

I thought they weren't allowed to play the pity party card on the telethons anymore? Mind you it has been some time since I've watched one, so....

I don't really mean telethons, necessarily - but for instance, I'll read an article online about a kid with autism, and the comments will be like:

"TEARS PRAYERS TEARS!"

Or the article itself will basically be like that. And there are times shows and movies this too. The only thing I liked about Glee was that Becky was so not an inspirational blessing from Heaven Above. (And even that got twisted into another kind of awkward. Especially the shooting episode.)

I wonder if writers prefer disabled-by-injury because of the (perhaps highly unrealistic) possibility that the character can someday be made not-disabled (or at least have the possibility dangled in front of them for drama). I don't think that scenario actually gets played out much, so I'm probably just being uncharitable.
