Love:

"Oh noes, I'm totally in love with my bff but I'm 100% sure he's totally straight! Allow me to make a fool out of myself for 5,000 words trying to deny/hide/control my lust and jealousy!"

Character A is hurt/in danger and Character B goes BAMF in A's defense and/or commits extravagant, Dickensian gestures of epic devotion and self-sacrifice for A.

"I hate you!" "I hate you too!" "Wait, actually, I love you!" "Oh fuck, me too!" "Let's make out!" "Hell yeah!"

All the exquisitely tragic character death fics.

Hate:

Fics where the characters stop caring about jobs or issues that were of central importance to them in the actual canon because they're too busy gazing into each other's eyes or being vomit-inducingly domestic in great detail.

Noooooo to character death fic. I just can't.

And I love Character B going BAMF to defend Character A. Especially when Character B is not usually BAMF.

I love character death in fic because I can have my cake and eat it too -- I get all the epic tragedy and angst and drama, but the character ceases to be dead as soon as I close the tab. But character death absolutely terrifies me in canon (for serial things like TV shows and comics, anyway).

<3 Yes, please.

But do you dislike all fluffy fics that don't have case/job things in them, or the fluffy fics that do have case/job things in them but with the characters not giving a damn?

I mostly just dislike it when it's implied or shown or stated in the fic that the characters no longer care about their previously very important cases/jobs/issues. Like, a long fic that is all about the characters' ~big damn relationship issues~ or some other random plot which has no connection to any of the things that were central to the characters' lives in canon, and doubly so when they're depicted as no longer caring about or being involved in the things that are important to them in canon. (The exception to this is retirement fic, though).

I don't at all mind fics that can be read as the characters taking a brief time-out from their jobs/issues for the duration of the fic in order to focus on something else, especially if the fic is on the shorter side.

Oh, I dislike that, too. Though it doesn't happen too often in gen fic, I've seen some instances when the characters just go all "fuck the cases, I'll just be a drama queen about my friendship with this other character instead". (eyein' u, Sherlock fandom).

But then again, they were generally badly written.

I guess it must be much more common in romance-y fics. I've read some stuff by Atlin Merrick, and it's all like that. I was torn between laughing and being irritated.

My least favorite is when the fic mentions or shows them quit their jobs or get out of a situation that strongly defined them in canon or something, but the fic doesn't even acknowledge how important a change it would be for the characters to do that and its treated like just some kind of regular 9-to-5 job to pay the bills. "Oh that thing? The activity that was my main purpose in life these X number of years? Yeah whatever that's over now let's be sickeningly romantic and fuck a lot."

Is Atlin Merrick a fic writer? In which fandom(s)?

She's a Sherlock fanfic writer with okay writing skills, a love for pervasive, endless smut, and a god awful sense of humour.

I think the worst part of her smut fics is that she's trying to joke when writing smut. It ends badly.

Me too! I'm like "Guys, it's really great that you're having all this awesome sex and whatnot, but don't you have to go to work at some point?" It's not that hard to write around those everyday duties, and a little separation and anticipation can make things all that much sweeter.

Exactly. That's why I like Leslie and Ben on Parks and Recreation.

Thank you. To a point there's realism about it - but just because it sometimes happens IRL doesn't mean it needs to happen in fiction. And usually the change will be so drastic that if someone did stop caring about everything else that rapidly IRL, you'd think they were in a really unhealthy relationship, not a stable, loving relationship.

(The exception to this being when it's on purpose, of course.)

Mmmm, yes to all of these. As much as I dislike character death if it's done well I love the agony it inflicts upon me.
