I doubt they gave him a fedora for any particular reason, a lot of the fashion in that episode seems to be stuck in the 40's and 50's and he's not the only character in that episode in a fedora. They likely gave it to him to stick with the whole cities aesthetic, including a mad men reference earlier in the episode.

I like season four so far, if only slightly for the wank it causes. Twilight's love interest from Equestria Girls making a cameo caused a stir like Broni Friendzoni did, as well.

The only wank I saw surrounding the grumpy cat pony was people complaining about internet memes creeping into the show, I never saw anything about the fedora being complained about considering that fedoras were apparently common in that episode, I can remember seeing at least 5 in the episode, including the ones during the mad men reference, so I doubt the animators thought about the pony as anything beyond a grumpy cat reference.

but yeah. honestly cameos don't bother me that much and they can even be amusing. just as long as they don't become the focus of the show.
