well, now that you point it out... I mean, that's a really weird pick up line and he's basically asking in a roundabout fashion if you're alone (and apparently cuckling to himself afterwards).

I wouldn't think of it at first, but it's definitely an afterthought.
If you think that's unreasonable, try growing up as somebody who gets the responsibility dumped on them to "stay safe" wherever you go. If your parents talk about it often enough, you can't help thinking about it.
