What I don't understand is how her defenders will say Ned was responsible for putting her in a situation to hate Jon (which is true) but yet most of them are ardent Ned/Cat shippers. It doesn't compute for me.

Because neither Ned, Cat, or their relationship actually revolved around Jon Snow? Yes, that was one bone of contention, but Ned treated her well in all other ways, and the Jon Snow issue didn't stop them from sharing similar values (Ned may have been all Stark but he practically lived by the Tully motto anyway), having a bunch of kids they loved, and clearly being in love with each other.

Considering she treated an innocent kid like crap for 14 years, I'd say it was a pretty big damn part of their lives.

Q: Thus, the question I have is if Catelyn went out of her way to mistreat Jon in the past -- and which form this might have taken -- or if she rather tried to avoid and ignore him?

A: "Mistreatment" is a loaded word. Did Catelyn beat Jon bloody? No. Did she distance herself from him? Yes. Did she verbally abuse and attack him? No. (The instance in Bran's bedroom was obviously a very special case). But I am sure she was very protective of the rights of her own children, and in that sense always drew the line sharply between bastard and trueborn where issues like seating on the high table for the king's visit were at issue. And Jon surely knew that she would have preferred to have him elsewhere. - George R. R. Martin

Straight from the horses mouth, she wasn't all that abusive to Jon. It's not like it affected him all that much anyway, he still ended up well adjusted. Deal with it, Jon fangirl.

Some people feel very strongly about any emotional abuse of children under any circumstances.

It's a fictional character, not a real life child. People need to control their autism.

Oh look, another Jon Snow ableist reddit dudebro...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
And Catelyn's also a fictional character, so there's no more reason to get bent out of shape defending her. I fail to see your point?

Not accepting someone into your family =/= abuse.

It's not like it affected him all that much anyway, he still ended up well adjusted.

ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS??? It's okay to mistreat kids as long as they turn out all right???

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Not that it's okay, but 1.) she wasn't all that bad to him anyway, 2.) she had no obligation to be nice to the guy, and 3.) it clearly wasn't that abusive since he doesn't even really give a shit. Bastards get treated like crap everywhere in Westeros, if anything he got treated better than most bastards do.
