lol. I'm sure that's true for a lot of people.

I'm just completely out of fucks to give if people think I'm being mean when defending Cat Stark.

That's because she and her pals are the first people to call everything in the fandom "problematic."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A+ response.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Clearly I'm hanging out in the wrong fandom spaces. Catelyn is always a divisive character but the discussions somehow manage to be civilised.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel that way about Sansa fans. I love Sansa, I'm disgusted by the hate she gets in parts of the fandom, but holy shit are some Sansa fans obnoxious. If you disagree with them in any way, you're a repulsive horrible misogynist. I remember that time someone said they didn't want Sansa to be Queen in the North because they wanted her to be happy and find out that her two little brothers are still alive, both of whom come first in the line of inheritance. And then a shitstorm happened about how the person who said that was a disgusting misogynist who thought women shouldn't rule. So if Catelyn fans are anything like Sansa fans ... I see your point, OP. :/

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I discovered Sansa fans during Fandom March Madness and holy fuck are they obnoxious to the extreme.

I really dislike the idea of people denying that in older societies male inherit first. It still exists in some RL royal families, though more and more are doing away with it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Surely you can wish that Sansa would be the Queen in the North (or even think it's possible) without denying that male inheritance existed/exists.

FYI, possible RTYI: When the British monarchy changed the law so that Will & Kate's kid would inherit no matter the gender, there was a proposal put forth in the Canadian province of Quebec to declare that unconstitutional. The supreme court threw it out, but if it had passed and Prince George had been a Georgina there was the chance that, while she would have still been Queen across the commonwealth and for the other 12 parts of Canada, a younger brother might have become King of Quebec. *Just* Quebec.

Soooo glad that the extent of my involvement in this fandom takes place here, where no one seems too crazy.

I didn't even know there were Cat haters. Every person I follow on tumblr likes her. CLEARLY I HAVE FOUND THE SAFE HAVEN IN THIS STORM.

There are a loooooooot of creepy misogynistic fans in GofT. The series doesn't help, with the constant parade of female flesh.

I've seen haters of other female characters on GoT, but never for Cat or Arya. I'd like to keep it that way.

Cat gets a lot of hate. The only real reason I can think to dislike her is for the way she treated Jon Snow, but some people hate her for all sorts of weird reasons.

I wonder how many people dislike her just because she obviously prioritizes her marriage and children. There are people who go on about how that sort of thing is ~not empowered~.

I've seen others blame her (and only her) for starting the war in the first place by capturing Tyrion and claim it's entirely her fault that the Red Wedding happened.

These are usually from the same dudebros who worship Littlefinger and take all responsibility for the war off him. It's ridiculous how far the GOT fandom will go when it comes to pointing fingers at the wrong fucking people. This fandom is clinically stupid.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS THIS THIS

I love this character, I've always enjoyed reading about her and she's good on the shows. However, I do not like how she treated Jon Snow- so she has character flaws *shrugs* Over all, she's a good strong character. But if you dare say anything about how she treated Jon Snow, it's all of her stans going out of their fucking minds. Oh, you must be a Jon Snow fangirl- no, I find Jon Snow a mildly irritating Gary Stu. I just call things like it is.

I remember goddamn pages of feminist meta someone spewed out in defense of her being so nasty to Jon Snow. TL;DR on why women were in an insecure position of power if their husband had a bastard son, blah, blah, blah.

I had to stop reading the crap because I was getting irritated very quickly by the batshittery and didn't want to associate Cat with the it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like Cat well enough, but I just don't see how she's some sort of great feminist hero like her stans would have you believe. She should have forced a confrontation with Ned instead of nursing resentment towards Jon for years.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends where her defenders are. I suppose that if you spend most of your time on Tumblr or LJ her defenders can be over the top and annoying - I certainly agree that she is flawed and it would annoy me if people constantly refused to acknowledge that... but I don't know, I tend to discuss ASOIAf mostly on Reddit and the bunch of people there who are utterly vitriolic and unsympathetic to her come across as a lot worse. And it's not rare for people to go 'this is probably an unpopular opinion but I hate Cat, the whole war was her fault, she made all the wrong decisions etc.', so it's not all people reacting against Cat's oh-so-annoying defenders. (And I don't mind being one of those annoying people myself in these circumstances.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand is how her defenders will say Ned was responsible for putting her in a situation to hate Jon (which is true) but yet most of them are ardent Ned/Cat shippers. It doesn't compute for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Because neither Ned, Cat, or their relationship actually revolved around Jon Snow? Yes, that was one bone of contention, but Ned treated her well in all other ways, and the Jon Snow issue didn't stop them from sharing similar values (Ned may have been all Stark but he practically lived by the Tully motto anyway), having a bunch of kids they loved, and clearly being in love with each other.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Considering she treated an innocent kid like crap for 14 years, I'd say it was a pretty big damn part of their lives.
