(Pet peeve time: for the contingent out there who sneer at heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman and Captain America, those icons who still, at their core, represent selfless sacrifice for the greater good, and who justify their contempt by saying, oh, it’s so unrealistic, no one would ever be so noble… grow up. Seriously. Cynicism is not maturity, do not mistake the one for the other. If you truly cannot accept a story where someone does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do, that says far more about who you are than these characters.)

Excellent quote. I'm a fan of all three of those characters, though I admit I like Supergirl a bit more than Superman just because she has a more pronounced outsider story (even in the Silver Age), and well I always like super-heroines.

But Superman, and Cap are both the pinacles of humanity in their universe, far from being black and white when written well they struggle with ethical issues more than Batman (who will break any law short of murder to come out on top), the Punisher (Who loves murder). Captain America and Superman are totally defined by their humanity.

I think that's a bit of an unfair assessment of Batman. I'd say his humanity is usually an important part of his character too.

Batman is cynicism personified, yes he does have a lot of great human moments and I like him too but Clark is much more relateable, not trying to say Batman is a bad character but Clark is sooo human, and so relatable if you read his stories and there is the "Kill Bill," based perception that his humanity is a disguise, it's not.

Bruce is cynical in the sense that he's very paranoid, and always prepares for the worst, but in many ways he's also pretty idealistic. For example he always believes that every criminal he encounters can be rehabilitated and deserves a helping hand and second chance(the Joker being an exception, of course). So I don't know if he's cynicism personified, per say. I guess it depends on the writer too.
But yes, I do agree that Clark is more relatable, and incredibly human. I love both of them, so yeah, definitely not arguing against you on that one.

The thing with Batman and Superman, to my mind, is this: Superman is not human, and he's dedicated his life to trying really, really hard to be human. Batman IS human, and has dedicated his life to trying not to be.

See, to me it comes down more to the fact that Clark is Superman's authentic personality (at least post crisis), where as Batman is Bruce's authentic personality and much of how he behaves as "Bruce" is his mask.

I never really loved Superman because he's kinda boring to me. I didn't realize people disliked him because he was noble.

granted, although Cap and Wonder Woman are like my ENTIRE HEART, I am not nuts about Supes. I like him, and it's not that he's ~too noble to be real~, I just wish more comic book writers would write him in the way I like best for him to be written (aka very human, for all his power) and many do not (instead choosing to focus on the Super Strong part and roll out bigger tougher villains to challenge him physically, and base all the story's conflict around that). Like, if he was always written the way they wrote him in the Justice League cartoon, I would love him so much more. He's obviously still overpowered and still very much the Do The Right Thing guy, but they frame him much less as a god than a man. He can be jealous, he can be impatient, he can be kind of a dick sometimes, he has weaknesses that bad guys can totally exploit. He can joke around with Batman, he can be unsure how he feels about Diana, he has NO IDEA how to be a father figure to Supergirl, he clearly loathes Luthor to a level that most writers aren't willing to show. The "world of cardboard" speech. Human! You can be this human, this rounded a character, and still always be counted on to put others before yourself and do the right thing because it's the right thing to do.

For me the contempt isn't exactly because I believe no one would be so noble... it's more that these perfect noble characters are also associated with American patriotism which I find pretty much the opposite of noble.
