It's because the show is awful and full of awful. It's one of the skeeviest shows to reach this kind of popularity in recent memory.

mte. I don't feel ill like OP or anything, but I do hate it and wish I never had to come across it... and I'm a huge fan of fantasy, and even dark fantasy.

I fell in love with the atmosphere and the cinematography of the show (didn't read the books), and with most of the actors, but I don't think it goes much past that. Still, I think the show deserves some credit for being so pretty? I'm honestly talking as an ignorant here, because I have no idea about the original plot.

I have to say though, that I can't imagine how the books could captivate me without the pretty scenery and good actors.

You got that right. It's sad that THIS is the show everyone wants to watch for the unrestrained sexual content, when it's depicted in the skeeviest way possible.

The source material certainly isn't blameless but I think this is mostly the fault of HBO.

The Sopranos skeeved me out in the same way.

Not only is it skeevy, it's just grimdark badness. Like, if Rob Liefeld were to write a fantasy book it would be Game of Thrones.
