I don't think it'll ever cease to amaze me how many people have no idea that the Earth is not a sphere and that it does not, in fact, "revolve around the Sun".

Well, duh. It revolves around me.

Sorry but... the Earth doesn't revolve around the sun? But the Earth does orbit the sun? or am I missing something here.

Yeah, it's just that people think that the Sun is the centre of the Earth's orbit.

They're used as synonyms in general conversation.

Eh? I'm fairly sure the Earth does revolve around the sun. As it's in a heliocentric orbit, and all. What?

And, while the Earth isn't a perfect sphere, since it flattens at the poles and bulges at the equator, it's still broadly spherical. *looks up term* Oblate spheroid? Important distinction in physics, but probably not necessary in everyday conversation, I'd think?

mte lol. I mean, it's not a perfect sphere, but I assume someone who said the Earth was a sphere would be simply affirming that the Earth is not flat.

And the Earth does revolve around the Sun... not in a perfect circle, but yeah... so. Unless we're splitting hairs here. :P

No, not necessary, but I'm always surprised nobody knows that there is a difference. Especially since I usually talk about the shape of the Earth in relation to physics rather than anything else.

Well, part of the confusion's probably in your phrasing. Saying "the Earth doesn't revolve around the sun" isn't quite the same as "the centre of the Earth's orbit is not (technically the sun". It'd be a bit like telling people "San Francisco isn't in California" when what you REALLY mean is "San Francisco isn't the capital of California".

But frankly, even if you were to clarify, it'd sound pedantic and hair-splitting at best because characterising this subject from a physics point of view is not common knowledge.

It's not technically the sun. It's the center of mass of both the Earth and the Sun. However, since the sun is six orders of magnitude more massive than the Earth, the technical differences are negligible, and the counter-orbit for the sun is only 280 km. The only two planets that do have a significant counter-orbit apparently are Jupiter and Saturn, and for both of them the center of mass is well within the sun's radius.

I'm feeling a bit daft now, but could you explain what you mean?

I always knew about how Earth isn't technically a sphere, but I only recently learned about it's not-quite-orbit around the sun in my planetary astronomy class. *shrugs*
