Best fantasy video games?

I like games, especially fantasy games. What ones in this genre do you think are the best?

I loved Dragon Age and Dragon Age 2, and the Elder Scrolls series (I wanted to be critical of Skyrim just because it was overhyped, but I loved it as much as Oblivion. Don't remember the story at all, but who plays ES for the story? haha). I'm currently playing Demon Souls... a couple years too late, and then am going to brave Dark Souls after that.

Okay, here's a list:

The Souls series, yes -- but also King's Field: The Ancient City, another From Software joint for PS2 and now semi-rare.

If you like more traditional action games, Heretic is effectively Doom with a fantasy flavour, Hexen is a nice twist on the formula and plays rather different, Hexen II is fantastic (and pretty gorgeous for a Quake 1 engine game!) and Heretic... I have not played but it's apparently in third person.

The Thief series -- yes, that includes the new one -- are effectively fantasy steampunk first person stealth games. My personal favourite is Thief Gold (updated version of the original and the only one most digital distributors sell) but Thief 2 has hundreds upon hundreds of fan-made levels and Thief 3 has the Cradle.

Legend of Grimrock, if you like traditional grid-based first person dungeon crawlers in the vein of Dungeon Master.

Etrian Odyssey series -- see above.

Skyrim's story isn't bad. Some nice political intrigue. It's better than Oblivion's, anyway.

I like it because it does add something to the lore of the world, and the lore is what I really love about ES games, you know?

I played the game for like, 80 hours, and hardly did any of the story. I just remember killing a bunch of dragons, and collecting houses, horses, wives and children.

Good for you? Not everyone likes the story, but - unlike the OP implied - some people do - and it's fine either way.

I'm playing Dragon's Dogma right now and it's pretty fun! But if you plan on buying it, go for Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen version. It's a re-release with a lot of new things, because Capcom sucks like that. Don't make the mistake I did.

Legend of Grimrock, Shadow Run Returns, and Etrian Odysessy are pretty swell too.
