I know the difference and when I was little I was really hyper-aware of it but when I was around 13 or so I started confusing them. I still knew but I'd mess them up all the time, and I even told my mom that I thought I was getting stupider as I got older. (Her response? "Get used to that.") So people might know but just make mistakes, especially when it's in casual conversation.
