It gets old once you start putting it on everything and in everything, and everyone insists on putting it on everything because they think chocolate in a jar is an essential nutrient.

Also, cookie spread is where it's at.

Be glad you never met someone who seriously bought, and still does, the old commercials telling them it's part of a healthy breakfast.

I never liked Nutella. I love a lot of other things with chocolate in them, just not Nutella.

juicy fruit is only going to move you for a super short period, and then it's a flavourless tough substance. The tastiness is not worth the sad.

OH MAN Fushigi Yuugi.

I used to love that when I was a preteen and I just tried to rewatch it recently. It did not go well.

(The music's still pretty cool though. I can't hate the tunes.)

I don't know what the specific turning point was, maybe between Nuriko's awful backstory and the constant rape as motivation, but it was like I finally understood Yuu Watase is a terrible writer.

Was still very pretty to watch and read though.

The more that series went on, the more I was done with Yuu Watase. I loved the concept of Fushigi Yuugi and got attached to the characters, but it probably should have ended at the tv series ending. The tv series alone was traumatizing enough, but the more the story went on the worse it got.

I remember after watching FY my friend tried to get me into Ayashi no Ceres and a only a few episodes in I was like, "NOPE more of Watase's bullshit. Nope nope nope nope."

Whatever you do, don't read Sakura Gari. It is easily her worst series when it comes to rape and sexual abuse. Not to mention it is legitimately terrible.

All her main characters, by which I mean the relatable whinge fest self-inserts, are the same anyway. Read one work, you've read them all (plus or minus magical trauma).

da

Takiko from Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden was a pretty decent protag iirc. Itchas been years since I read it though and I never finished it so she could have got worse.

I liked Imadoki and Alice 19th but...I also haven't read them since high school.

Alice 19th still holds up pretty okay. It's not the best thing ever, but Alice is relatable, and shows some fairly realistic growth over the story.

My sister read Alice 19th on a whim, and I think she liked it. I don't trust her taste in anything though. Because I enjoy hate-watching/reading/playing sometimes, I might check it out like I've done with some of Watase's other things. why couldn't i stop reading absolute boyfriend the fuck is that book my kismesis???

I bet if I went back and reviewed all the things I liked as a teenager though, I'd probably find it doesn't hold up to my tres cooler measure of quality now

The specific turning point was when she introduced Nakago and he got more promenient in the story. Instead of getting a badass drama between Yui and Miaka, we got him and his bullshit.

GDI I forgot Nakago basically hijacked the story because he was the author's pet favourite. That he had so many fans didn't help any.

Re: Stuff you used to love but now can't stand?

Those of us who can't stand him try to forget about him so no worries. He was such an awful and blatant draco in leather pants type of character that I couldn't stand him. If Yuu Watase wasn't such a bad writer he could have been halfway decent, but I still think the story would have been much better without him.

Re: Stuff you used to love but now can't stand?

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2014-03-03 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think part of it was the constant rape/attempted/threatened rape in the storyline, and part of it was how hackily the Seiryu Seishi were handled--especially Nakago.

"Yeah, Nakago is doing everything short of punting puppies into the sun and he's super-evil and unforgivable, he's manipulative as hell and does all this nasty shit so he can become a god OH WAIT LAST HALF OF THE LAST EPISODE HERE'S LIKE A MINUTE AND A HALF OF TRAGIC BACKSTORY, NOW FEEL BAD FOR HIM"

Speaking of the last episode, I also really hated how Miaka and Tamahome got their happy ending so easily, and Suzuno and Tatara got jack shit. MIAKA AND TAMAHOME BASICALLY GOT IT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE LITERALLY GOD'S FAVORITE AND SUZUNO AND TATARA HAD TO WAIT FOR EACH OTHER FOR DECADES UNTIL THEY BOTH DIED AND THEIR GHOSTS MET UP! WAS THAT NOT TRUE ENOUGH LOVE?

I really loved the concept and I loved the Suzaku Seishi as characters--I even liked Miaka at the very beginning, when she was kind of sassy and stubborn, and not just pining all the time--but it was really poorly-executed.

Re: Stuff you used to love but now can't stand?

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2014-03-03 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I got into the series because of the ensemble cast, but it felt like it might have been too big for her to not end up writing herself into corners. The sudden "deep and tragic" backstories, and the truer love of MIAKA!TAMAHOME! overcoming everything at the expense of worthless sacrifices for the sake of angst got a bit much to swallow.

That and, like you said, Nakago who is so a Gary Stu with an apparent shot at redemption.

Re: Stuff you used to love but now can't stand?

[personal profile] leikomgwtfbbq 2014-03-03 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
That's all true too!

I always wondered why ALL of the Seishi on every side had a tragic backstory. I always wanted to write a sequel parody story about a new Byakko no Miko who had just a bunch of regular random people as Seishi.

"So what's your tragic backstory?"
"A kid knocked over my cabbage cart by accident and I lost my day's work, but that's okay, because I have more cabbages to sell tomorrow."
"Cool."

Oh, Fushigi Yuugi. I remember being all over that in middle school but my God, I can't stand it now. Even back then I was annoyed that every other word out of Miaka's mouth was "Tamahome" because I thought he wasn't that great of a guy anyway.
And then all of my favourite characters get KILLED but it's okay because Miaka and Tamahome are together AND THAT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. I can totally see why it appealed to middle-school me, but now it just seems so over-the-top melodramatic.

I tried to watch Ayashi No Ceres too, but after a while I was like, PFFFFT. NO. SORRY YUU WATASE, I AM DONE.
