STORY OF MY LIFE RIGHT HERE

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-03-03 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
I read a LOT ever since I was a little kid. It used to make me just sad if/when I knew things other kids didn't, but what really bothered me was how often I knew things the adults - often even the teachers - around me didn't.

I learned from several separate teachers that some veins are blue because blood cells turn blue when they deoxygenate, but you never see it because once you cut your skin the blood cells absorb the oxygen from the air and turn red again.

THREE SEPARATE TEACHERS. >.<

(Sorry, 'All Caps is Yelling' Anon, but I have strong feelings about this).

I'm still never quite sure if what I know is actually common knowledge or only feels like common knowledge to me but is really unknown. It doesn't help that my current social circle has some pretty disparate interests and educational background, so the problem is that even things that generally are considered common knowledge may not be well known because said friends came from really crappy schools or anti-intellectual environments. I can get being confused about whether there are 8 or 9 planets around the sun given the shenanigans with Pluto, but how do you get to college without knowing what the Asteroid Belt is?

Re: all caps = yelling

It used to be common knowledge. In the early days of the internet, it was basic netiquette. You don't type in all caps unless you're yelling. Everyone knew it, except newbies who just stumbled onto the web-- and they would be promptly informed as soon as they erred. Then the internet exploded and more people flooded on faster than the older users could educate them, and eventually the newbies won and netiquette isn't a term that's used anymore.

I found it an irritating lesson back then, but now I miss netiquette. :(
