Idina Menzel at Last Night's Oscars

It was a pleasant surprise to find out how many vocalists are on this com. I'd like to solicit your opinion about Idina Menzel's performance of "Let It Go" at the Academy Awards last night.

I was personally shocked to hear how many people say it was "amazing" and "beautiful". Like objectively speaking. I know some of the fault was with the orchestra and the earpieces, but I thought her voice was in shit condition and that performance was physically painful to watch. I'm actually seriously wondering if she's got laryngitis or an infection. Then again I've seen numerous videos of Idina singing live and I've always had a feeling that her technique was...off somehow, in the way that can ultimately do you instrument real damage in the long run.

Anyway, thoughts?

Didn't watch the Oscars, but if you post a link to a youtube of the performance or whatever, I'll comment after I get back from choir practice.

Then again, I never liked the damn song in the first place.

Who's Idina Menzel? I think you meant Adele Dazeem. ;)

Seriously, though, very disappointing performance from her and she knew it. She cracked at those high notes. For whatever reason, she struck me as incredibly nervous. Which should be ridiculous, she's won a Tony (I think?) and is a Broadway superstar. But she honestly looked like she was shaking up there, and her vocal performance reflected that.

I love her, but weak. Not as bad as Bette Midler's performance though lol

All the singers I heard at the oscars sang like shit so I'm going to blame it on the oscar ceremony itself.

I've never been crazy for her style (and most power-belting in general), but she didn't seem on her usual form, no. I think she seemed to know it too. Hope she's well for the U-turn straight back to NY for If/Then.

I didn't watch the performance but I saw a few short clips and was like, "Wow, she sounds like she's really struggling" :X And I like the song and everyone on my tumblr dash was going nuts over it so I expected it to be, you know, TOTALLY GREAT.

I also had a friend who said he was all for Let It Go winning the Oscar until the live performance, so...yeah.

I just told my roommate that I've decided I only like her voice when it's been recorded. I just think she sounds fuller, more focused when she's not live. Which sucks, because usually the live performance is so much more dynamic and fulfilling.

But she has a Very particular voice and style, so it's something not everyone will like regardless of context or avenue, and whether or not it's been recorded. She's incredibly distinct, which is why more people are starting to recognize her in Hollywood and movies since Rent came out (all those years agooo...). It's kinda nifty that it's getting more people talking about Broadway again.

But it's definitely not my thing.

I've heard her sing better. That particular performance was not exactly pleasant. She sounded not as strong and fairly nasal. Maybe she is sick? Definitely not on her A-game last night.
