Yes. Supposedly, the worst of the worst Mexican gangs, MS-13. But I've never seen them. But they pop up on the news every so often.

Mostly neighborhood small-timers who get rolled up in police blitzes every so often. We have your violence and your murders but rarely do we have shootouts and I can't remember an out-and-out gang war for the life of me.

Home city: ohgodyes. And the arrest of Chapo Guzman is only going to make things worse...

Current city: yes, but compared to Home City they're kind of a joke and not nearly as bad as they once were.

Yep. Hell's Angels, Crips, some mafia operations (that I personally know of, there are probably more). You really wouldn't know it though. The influence here isn't that big.

There was an ex Hell's Angel member who used to sit next to me in some of my University classes. Great guy, actually.

Some of the worst in europe supposedly.

Find that kind of hard to beleive though, because that includes eastern europe.

Some Latino gangs on the east side of town, and general knowledge is we've got a few Organizatsiya types who are usually running at least one of the clubs downtown. The biggest problem, though, is whichever assholes are bringing in the meth this week, and they're not usually that organized.

No. And I didn't even know gangs were a real thing until I was an adult. I just thought they were one of those TV over-exaggeration made up for the drama. Sometimes the naivete of my former self amazes me.

I thought Triads were like that, just exaggerated movie nonsense so Chow Yun-Fat would have people to shoot at. Then I visited Hong Kong and saw posters on the walls of teen hangouts saying TEENS BEWARE: TRIAD INVOLVEMENT LEADS TO JAIL. Serves me right for thinking that cultures other than my own were safely imaginary.

I'm far less worried about "roving gangs of black youth" (my mom is terrified of them and gives me shit every time I go to visit my grandma or see a show) and much more worried about the white methheads running around my own neighborhood. I don't think we even have any real Hispanic gangs in Cincinnati despite a heavy population in Carthage.

The cartels run them off as soon as they form.

We don't got enough people to make a gang. :P

Not really. We supposedly have some small motorcycle gangs, but it's not like they ever do anything visibly.

That is fortunately something I've never had to worry about. We did have a mystery herd of goats once. There were like 10 or 12 of them. We don't know where they came from, no one within several miles claimed them, or had any idea who they might belong to. No one could keep them penned up anywhere, they were the Houdini of goat herds. They hung around for days, harassing us, and our animals including the dogs, and cats. I was a kid, so Mom was afraid to let me go outside at all. Then one morning they were just gone. We never saw, or even heard about them again. I always imagined they were going on some grand adventure, looking for the goat promised land or something, not taking crap from anybody on the way.

We have several small-ish (by that I don't really mean 'small' so much as 'not-nationally a big deal') mexican street gangs that hate each other and get into turf fights and tag stuff. I live on the nice side of town though, but my school is kind of near the border so I occassionally get some interesting classmates.
There was this one white guy who swore up and down he was a Crip and he acted all tough and everything but everyone was pretty sure he was just posing.
This other dude was only still in high school because he got busted for dealing drugs and he was actually pretty cool. We got to be friends. He'd stopped dealing drugs and was turning his life around slowly but I guess he coukdn't really just leave his gang. Sometimes we'd be talking about our futures and he'd be saying all the stuff he wanted to do but then he'd just stop and get this look on his face. Said he'd be surprised if he ever lived past 30. Find it pretty sad.

I'm pretty sure not. If we do, I've never heard about it.

None that I have personally seen but yes there are gangs in my city.

Yes but they're mostly dying. We have seven main gangs left here. I kind of find them harmlessly irritating at best? On one hand that's mostly because a majority of the gang members know me by name from organizations I volunteer for but it's also because most of their various turf struggles are mostly focused on tagging and myspace drama lol.

We had a police sergeant straight up (anonymously) admit to reporters cops here they're trying to keep the younger members out of the prison system as much as possible because prison is where thug wannabes go to learn how to actually pose a threat. Community service gets handed out a lot.

For all the drug use, racial tension, boredom, and machismo values we have here there's been surprisingly little violence as a result in the latest generation. With the exception of one road rage incident suspected to have been exacerbated by gang ties I think our last driveby was in 2007 and even then it was sort of a standalone.

There's like a whole doco I haven't watched and everything. Honestly I would imagine most established cities would have gangs of some kind...

I live in Los Angeles. My NEIGHBORHOOD is gang turf.

Thankfully, this gang is fairly inactive compared to many other parts of the city - only one murder/homicide since I moved here, and I've heard maybe one or two shootings, and there's some graffiti.

At least no one stumbled into the living room bleeding out from a bullet in the chest (which is what happened at our LAST home in another part of Los Angeles, a little deeper into the city - right now I live a bit off Santa Monica, so it's much more peaceful here).

My father also briefly lived in South Central (infamous for stereotypical inner-city violence in Los Angeles). I never saw much, but then my father was unusually strict (extremely so for him, though understandable given the environment). I do remember waving to a group of young men outside a store - and seeing as I was a little girl, they waved back quite cheerfully, and then helped an old man lift a heavy box into the trunk of his car - and realizing only years later that they were all pretty heavily armed and likely deeply entrenched in the local hierarchy, and may have been involved in the one shooting I remember hearing at the time.

Thankfully, my experiences are very tame in comparison to many of my friends.

ETA: Case in point, my boyfriend lives a few blocks away from the epicenter of the Rodney King Riots, and one of my friends may actually have been involved in some heavy-duty drug dealing in high school (as opposed to lighter selling of a bit of weed under the table in high - which many people see as "not counting" as drug dealing in my city).

Probably, but I think most crime isn't that organized. My city is definitely a city but not a big one by most standards.

We might have small, informal gangs that aren't the same as one or two large, widely-networked, more-or-less infamous gangs?

This is making me kinda sad that I don't know more about this...
