Re: Can we start logging IP Adresses of Anons?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I 100% agree. For one thing, the anonymity protects us from internal bullying.

Hypothetically, let's say that someone doesn't like something I've got to say here. Then they obsessively sort through comments, picking out every one I've made, comparing them, picking and choosing for bits that fit the pattern they want to see.

Maybe they think I'm a liar so they point out that I said I liked X over here, and said I wasn't that impressed by it over here. Maybe they think I'm an evil oppressor, so they pick out everything I've ever said that can be read as against SJW orthodoxy, or every thread where I imply that I might have one privilege or another.

Now they've got this picture in their head, they can do two things. One, obviously, is to harass me in this community, waving their "proof" of how evil I am every time they think a comment is me.

The second is to stalk me OUTSIDE this community. I mentioned I've written in X fandom? I mentioned that I live in Y town? I made a reference to my age? I posted in the height and weight thread, or a personal grooming thread, or anything else that gives them a rough physical description of me? Well no prob, just scour through X fandom communities looking for someone who fits those descriptors. Maybe they wind up posting their crazy "expose" shit about me, maybe they wind up posting it about someone else because they're not very good at Internet Detective.

If you think this is an unrealistic scenario, I respect your opinion, but I've seen it play out in a couple of similar patterns, and I've seen it too many times.

Something like that happened to a friend of mine who used to post on here. Why do you think she doesn't post on here anymore?

What, this happened when she posted anon with IP logging turned on?!?!?!? Noooooooo......

I'm pretty sure he's talking about a user account.

(As far as I know, only case can see IP addresses. You should be fine anon as long as you don't connect yourself to actual accounts.)

Re: Can we start logging IP Adresses of Anons?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
That would be if you're a member. But logging the IP Addresses would not prevent you from being anonymous. It just means that Case, our moderator, knows which anon you are and if you're involved in harassment. Case would also be the only one that would know, and he's never abused his power, so he'd take handling this information very seriously.

You can't just punish everyone. It's not fair.

Re: Can we start logging IP Adresses of Anons?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
You'd only be "punished" if you were actually doing something shitty. Case only whips out banning people or informing the community that a troll anon is the same anon from another thread if they themselves abuse their privileges as an anon.

Privacy is a serious matter for some of us, you know. I don't want case to have my IP.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not like you can use a proxy or anything if privacy's a huge concern.

Didn't he publicly call fleshlight out? I'm not saying he was wrong just that... I'd be worried about it.

He's also called out anons who deliberately argued against themselves.

So now anons with dissociative identity disorder should not post here? Nice ableism there case.

Can't you save the straw warrioring for threads that aren't trying to have a serious discussion, failtroll?

To be fair, it's gotten really hard to around here.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
People here aren't that bright to be honest. Anon should have added a big PARODY WARNING.

AYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
In principle I know and respect that. I hope I don't come off as thinking less of case, who is cooler than a liquid nitrogen slurpee. My fear of getting doxxed, in any form, makes me jumpy enough that I cannot react well to any reduction in anonymity, even one that in principle ought to be just fine. I hope that clarifies where I'm coming from?

Only case as long as his account doesn't get hacked.
