Slash =/= what real gay people do. No need to start with a disclaimer that you're not homophobic.

Slash actually harms gay people by fetishising them for straight women's entertainment.

Oh darling.
No. Just no.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
You don't think that some fetishing doesn't happen in some slash?

You need to educate yourself. Darling.

No, darling, I never said that. But slash doesn't "harm" gay people. You also basically erased all queer slashers AND shamed women for their reading preference with your comment. Great try there, honey , but using -isms to call out -isms is pretty damn stupid.

idk I've met some straight girls who are like "omg YOU GUYS ARE GAY??? CAN I WATCH YOU KISS??? TELL ME ABOUT HOW YOU HAVE SEX" and that is sexual harassment so yes, it is harmful to individual gay dudes. Those same girls are total assholes to lesbians and yes I feel personally harmed by that.

I don't think slash fanfic invented that though. Perpetuated a bit, maybe, sure. But I think assholes are assholes no matter what. And sometimes it's just plain simple ignorance and they can learn.

Oh no, of course. Individual slasher might be assholes to individual gay people, no doubt about it. Just "slash" as a genre doesn't hurt "gay people" in general. Like you said, it's more like "shitty behaviour hurts people", less "this genre is always harmful to these people". Not every man automatically hurts lesbians just because some assholes tell girls to kiss for their own amusement.

yeah I agree!

I think there is definitely something like ingrained subconscious homophobia that contibutes to this shit as well but it's not slash's fault

Like I don't care if dudes like seeing women together (HELLO, I do too!) just as long as they're not assholes about it. UNFORTUNATELY many of them happen to be assholes but there are some cool people. We just have to keep...being...cool. I'm talking in circles now. You get me and I get you is what I'm saying.

I will say that in my case, slash actually was an advantage to gay people.

I grew up in a strongly Christian household, you know, the sort that believes the "Hate the sin, love the sinner" attitude to gay people? I found slash, and my mild distaste for gay people vanished.

So slash made me less homophobic!

Gay guy here. Here's a big flaming fuck you, since I've gotten some of my best moves from slash fiction. It's exaggerated, sure, but it's fantasy. So quit spewing shit you don't know about.
