I love slash fic as much as the next person, but in some fandoms you just get sick of it and want to read a nice friendship fic. Especially when all the meta you see on Tumblr about it are just posts about HOW CANON THIS IS!!!! and how they jump on people who don't ship characters.

"Gay people don't like watching straight porn", and you imply therefore "straight people (particularly you) don't like gay porn". People can and do like and watch what they want regardless of orientation.

And if you don't like slash so much, just avoid places that have it and/or do searches that exclude it.

One of the major reasons why write fanfiction is because they want to create something not found in popular media, basically a form of escapism.

Readers and writers use it as a way of exploring their sexuality, practicing their writing skills, etc.

A major reason why same-sex pairings are so popular in fandom is that there are very few (well written) same-sex couples and LGBT characters in popular media.
You say "WHY DO I NEED TO BE SMACKED IN THE FACE WITH GUY-GUY FIC?" When gay/bisexual people are 'smacked in the face' with GUY-GIRL books, movies and tv shows literally every day.

I'm not saying that not liking slash makes you a bad person, but for the love of God, do not harass or otherwise be mean to people for liking/writing slash. Just because you don't like slash, doesn't make you any more 'special' or 'better' than anyone else or vice versa.

****Oh and fun fact: There are a myriad of straight people (both male and female) who enjoy watching gay porn/ reading gay erotica and there's even some gay people who like to watch straight porn.

Who says gay people don't enjoy straight porn? I'm sure a lot of them don't but I bet there are plenty of them who don't mind it. And, you don't have to "put up with" anything, if you don't like it you can leave. Nobody is forcing you to go on the internet and run across slash.

-it's okay to like two guys as friends only, and if you feel like there's not enough content, I understand that sucks, but make it yourself. other people aren't obligated to fit your tastes when they want to ship
-as a gay person, I am so going to play this card because it's fucking true. when in "real life" there's het stuff all around, I think it's awesome that the sides are more even in fandom. if it bothers you, imagine what gay people feel like having straight stuff shoved in our faces at every corner. Like, sorry you can't scroll through tumblr or fan sites without seeing mention of a slash pairing, but why does it honestly bother you so much?

I actually used to be mildly homophoic** years ago, when I was new to the Internet. Fangirls insisting that I *must love slash!* to be in fandom did not help at the time. I daresay that some of them may have kept me from evolving sooner. The fact of the matter is that I did evolve, but the fact that I dealt with "friends" that were "you must believe that the boys are screwing off-screen are canon!" types - one in particular - who ended up betraying me and attacking people I cared about online over the issue of "have your fun but I just don't think it's canon" really makes fandoms that look like they're *inundated* with slash-only types hard for me to join.

I actually do like some slash pairings fics and arts I've seen on occasion for some of my fandoms (though I'm not much of a shipper in general), but I , to this day, find a visceral urge to "run away!" from anything that looks too fangirlish.

(** Since I'm watching the Daily Show and it's pertinent, I thought I'd mention here that I used to live in Arizona and am now an east-coaster. Geography has a lot on culture and change in attitudes).

My initial reaction was 'if you don't like it, don't read it'. On further thought, maybe that's easier said than done on tumblr? It was definitely easier to stick with your preferences back when fandom was mostly on LJ and dreamwidth. There were loads of gen communities for my last fandom. /Nostalgia.

After a couple of decades in fandom, I have to say that gender and sexuality do not seem to dictate what you enjoy in fic/porn. It's a very personal thing, that.

I don't like slash either. But guess what, OP? I just don't read it. If it pops up as a side plot in one of my OTPs I just skip the graphic parts that don't interest me just like I skip any other graphic parts that I don't like in any other story. Not liking slash doesn't make you homophobic but acting like a jerk over it sure makes you sound like it. So get your undies out of a bunch and relax.

Just in case you are serious, a lot of the reason slash is huge in fandoms is because it gets so little representation in popular media. Fandom is all about filling in the parts you want, and one of the things people find wanting... is slash. Why can't two guys just be friends, you say, but the real question is, why can't two guys be friends and then want to fuck each other on a show? You ask why you should have to put up with constantly seeing guy-on-guy, but the real question is, why should LGBT people have to constantly put up with seeing only het in popular media?

And far more interestingly, why do you assume that only straight people like straight porn and only gay people like gay porn? Not only does that ring false to me, but it implies that the slash fangirls who are "wrecking all [your] fandoms" and that you have such a problem with... are all gay people. You just made a secret telling us you have a problem with gay people.

Good thing you told us you're not homophobic though! Phew, for a moment there I might have started to wonder.

Someone above said it better than me - well, us queer people of various sorts are the ones smacked with heteronormativity everyday in the media.
I understand if OP's fandom friends constantly do that to them, otherwise they can freely walk away.

Though, I do wonder what the slash-dominant fandoms are? I've always been in those that are equal or mostly het. For the record it's usually video games or tv series.
