I love slash fic as much as the next person, but in some fandoms you just get sick of it and want to read a nice friendship fic. Especially when all the meta you see on Tumblr about it are just posts about HOW CANON THIS IS!!!! and how they jump on people who don't ship characters.

UGH I AM SO SICK OF "HOW CANON THIS IS" I just want to enjoy a fanon ship, jeez fandom. :|

The worst fandoms for that are Supernatural and Sherlock. Sherlock/John shippers have gotten particularly aggressive recently.

I'm not in either of those fandoms but I've heard terrible things about both. :\

Series 3 of Sherlock was the cause of that. I am still left wondering if the creators did it deliberately because they are really so enamoured of the tweeny little fannits, or because they are terrified of them. (Didn't the kids chase Moffat off Twitter at one point or smth?)

If they had gone back in the direction they started out in with A Study in Pink, the gross migratory (predatory? seems like they destroy every fandom they're in, and salt the earth for good measure) slash fandom would have moved on and found another shiny toy to pick apart. And the rest of us might have had something decently engaging to watch.

...maybe in a parallel universe?

At least you're admitting that Moffat and Gatiss are queerbaiting. Some people can't even do that.

Eh? I've seen the term hurled 1000 times by SJWs and I still don't know what it means. I'm just curious as to whether or not they actually did sell out to the delusional lowest common denominator purely for the money, or if they wrote the hot mess that is 110% fanfic series 3 because they were legitimately afraid there would be actual backlash if they didn't.

THIS. When did the 'canon' thing become so popular? I stepped out of fandom in general for a couple of years and when I came back, everyone was fixated on their ship being canon. It makes me miss the days when no one really expected show acknowledgement.

Yessss. I desperately want the fourth wall rebuilt.

Having a ship "legitimated" by canon has always been a thing for a large subset of fandom, though. It's just that until recently, the only people seeking canon validation were het shippers, because the (fem-)slashers knew better than to hope for actual queer relationships in mainstream media. Can't say I mind that changing, even if it has created some unpleasant side-effects.

I have to agree with you there, I have always found comfort in having non-canon pairings, non-canon means you do not have to conform to what canon shows of the pairing.

There is a valley between "this ship is an amazing idea, aww look there's even a couple cute bits in the canon" and "meta post #298 on why this ship is the whole reason the series exists" where good ships go to die awful deaths.

The opposite holds true as well.

What fandom are you in with a plethora of friendship fics and little slash fics. I need to get into this fandom.

People always say this but I don't hear it about het nearly as often even though there's just as much of it.

Don't you know? It's right and natural that males and females end up in sexual relationships, even after first being friends.

I don't like it when people get overzealous about het-shipping either... crying "Canon!" when something isn't or insisting that all "worthy" fics lean toward their favorite ships. Don't even get me started on the "Die For Our Ship" bent.

I've been in a certain fandom for years that has a subset of the fandom like this. Never mind that one half of their het pairing is a little girl - they claim it's canon and that it's not squicky or anything at all!

I guess the difference is that in het, the couples being shipped are usually canon couples/not bffs in canon, so there's no canon platonic friendship that gets altered when people write het. It's more canon-centricism than anything, but of course, this exposes the fact that there are so few close m/f friendships and so few canon gay and lesbian couples, which is a big problem.

Fandom devotes much more energy to correcting the latter than the former.

I'm in a fandom where a guy is raising a little girl, and no one ever seems to shut up about how she's going to grow up and they're going to fall in love, because they're not REALLY related. That seems to be a problem as well; all the denial when it comes to familial relationships if there's adoption involved.
