Notes:
As a note, social justice is not a fandom. Tumblr itself is not a fandom.

Re: troll
There have been studies that have shown that over 50% of slash fans are queer, fyi.
Re: troll

Re: troll
It's pretty informal, but it cites a lot of fandoms. Also, the person who put this together contacted the women who wrote the paper stating that most slashers are hetero women that was cited by wikipedia, and the woman admits that her samples weren't large enough and that at least half of slashers are queer.
Re: troll
(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 05:40 am (UTC)(link)she did a sample size of 10+ fans
Re: troll
Re: troll
Informal, but it cites various fandom surveys. Also, the woman who was cited in the wikipedia article claiming most slash readers are hetero women admitted her survey size wasn't large enough and redid her survey to find that many more women are queer.
Re: troll
I find that very interesting, if flawed. There's no real possibility of random sampling, there are undoubtedly differences in questions between surveys which could lead to disparate responses, possibility of misidentifying sexuality due to the choice of labels in some of the surveys... yeah, it's not exactly scientific.
That said, this seems intuitively closer to the truth than anything else I've seen, and brings up some interesting questions about how this breaks down for people who enjoy slash outside of these particular fandom spaces.
lol sorry to rant at you there.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)What is the sampling frame? We have no idea what the population is, so we can't make a sample representative. There's no list anywhere. The closest you'd probably be able to get would be sending an email out to every member of AO3 and FF.net, and even then you're not capturing people who lurk or do fandom in other spaces. You'd also more than likely have a fucking terrible response rate.

Re: troll
(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:28 am (UTC)(link)Though I'd wonder at the theory that many women who feel they are very "pro gay" consider themselves, on a more philosophical level, to be "open" to falling in love with someone of their gender. Would a slash fan, even if she were basically a straight woman, be more likely to identify as "open" or "slightly bisexual" because she identifies with the gay pairing she ships?
that probably sounded stupid when I typed it, but I'm really curious.
Re: troll
Even if it's only about 40% if you discount heteroflexible women, that's still a large number of queer readers.
I have to admit I'm always surprised when people say that the majority of slash readers are straight because the majority of people I've met in fandom who like slash pairings are definitely queer and many have been or are in queer relationships. It's funny because the two closest friends I have in fandom are both straight, but one of them isn't interested in m/m slash at all.
