Oh, you might be surprised. If the only thing standing between me and paying my rent or eating next week was writing for money, I might find myself extra inspired.

I thought I could google this up too, but my google-fu is also failing me! And now I'm so curious, what the hell. When did this happen?

Re: Do you observe Lent? if so, what are you giving up this year?

I really wish that people would focus on why they are giving up something. As a child, it was just you were supposed to give up something and it wasn't until I got much older that I started understanding why I was giving up something and how it could be a challenge and a good thing.

I used to do ice cream through college, but that became too easy. I tried to give up caffeine in high school, but I went through bad withdrawals and couldn't do it.

I also find it intriguing that you converted to Catholicism (though I understand why). I guess because I was raised it, but only halfheartedly (my mom's Catholic and my dad's not) it's a very different experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
The answer to that is "Sherlock fandom had really weird withdrawal symptoms."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's a bit silly because Tauriel really brings to life some of Tolkien's biggest themes. Love of starlight, choosing to save a life rather than take one, choosing to fight against the evil that threatens the whole world not just her home, even if it means abandoning her duties? So Tolkien I don't know what some people are thinking.

(I'm not saying he wouldn't have issues with her but imho, she's more Tolkien than a poop-covered, drugged-out Radagast.)

You keep using that word

Explain to me what characters are being used (other then the lizard) from the original Godzilla who are now depicted as white.

And the metaphor (which was and still is atomic weaponry sucks and mankind's arrogance is nothing before nature) is not only intact, but the original Godzilla was made FOR ENTERTAINMENT. Not later in the goofier movies. FROM DAY ONE.

Guess what this movie is being made for. If you really think Godzilla was ever meant to be any deeper then that, you're a dope. Just because people can find deep meaning in it doesn't mean they didn't pick up the shovels and go at it to get there.

*nods*

I can understand that. My husband is a cradle Catholic who's actually an atheist. He doesn't have the same deep-seated need that I do to find a religious system that works for me. He also finds value in Catholicism without necessarily believing in the god part of it.

I also take huge issue with not examining the reasons why you are doing something. I know this jackass who is not religious at all who crafted his own cross and who likes to climb up on it in his yard to observe Ash Wednesday. And he always gives up something for Lent even though it has no meaning for him. I always want to smack him upside the head and say, "You're on a diet, asshole! That's not the same!

(someday I'll actually finish a TF2 fic...)

"C'mere, Sally."

Soldier grapped Medic's shoulders in a bruising grip, closed his eyes, and crushed his mouth against Medic's. It took a moment before the pain of the collision gave way to a more pleasant pressure. Truth be told, it was far from the best kiss Medic had ever gotten, but it was certainly among the more enthusiastic. Besides, who was Medic to argue against a little pain?

After a couple moments during which it became clear that Soldier had no idea what to do besides continue to attempt to press forward, Medic put his hand to Soldier's cheek and, with more force than one would think should really be necessary to disengage a kiss, pushed their faces apart. He huffed out an amused breath at the way Soldier's face was still screwed up and lips puckered. Soldier blinked open his eyes at that and his expression turned to one of wary confusion.

Medic smirked and stroked Soldier's cheek with his thumb. "Well well, what brought this on?"

Apparently assured by this that his advances were not unwelcome, Soldier straighted and put on a cocky smile. "Because! I am a hero. And the hero always gets the girl in the end!"

Medic froze, scowling, and wrenched himself out of Soldier's grip.

"What? What's wrong?" asked Soldier, bewildered.

"Look, Herr Soldat, I have dismissed your ridiculous nicknames for me as just one of your many... quirks, shall we say. But you cannot seriously believe I am a woman?"

"Shhhh!" Soldier put a finger to Medic's lips and glanced around behind them. He leaned in to whisper into Medic's ear, "It's camoflague. I know you're a man! But I don't want them to know that."

"Them."

"Yes, them! Listen. I'm telling you this in the strictest confidence: There is a vast global conspiracy afoot, and it has even infiltrated this great land we call America! That is the reason for the deception. I can't let them know that I'm onto them. Not until I'm prepared to strike!"

"And this has what to do with you calling me 'Sally'?" Medic asked impatiently.

"Keep it down!" Soldier growled, and then dropped his voice again. "I was getting there. You didn't let me finish. I have to make sure you understand the gravity of this situation, because this conspiracy is particularly insidious. ...They want us men to go after women. They don't want us to realize..." Soldier scanned the room again and then leaned in even closer, so close that his lips brushed Medic's ear as he whispered. "...that with two men, it's twice as manly."

I hope so, anon.

It's one thing to tell someone DIAF OMG LOL but it's another to deliberately put them in a situation where physical and mental harm will be inflicted upon them, and worse. And then laughing about it. Especially after they were previously traumatized by something similar.

I get we're all human, but there's no god damned excuse for treating another human being like that. None.

Thank you for your counterpoint, I'm a semi-pro amateur artist and I'm currently having to shell out $400 for Corel Painter because I stupidly lost my student license serial number for Photoshop during a reboot (PS is running $600+ for the non-sub version) The cheaper tools really don't compare, plus I had to buy a scanner over Christmas and decent tablets cost anywhere from $300-$1000. Groceries are probably going to be a bit tight this month but the Photoshop CC seems a bit sketchy plus it'll cost more in the long run so Painter it is D:

And don't even get me started on paint/canvas/sketchbooks/pencils/framing/printing/inks/etc. that was a major portion of my tuition at art school.

I find that with a lot of Catholics who were born into it, they sort of give it up. I haven't been to church in forever, but mostly because I work on Sundays and it's just not what we do. But I went on my own in college (going to a school in the South encouraged that, but being Catholic I was still slightly outcast)

I don't follow a lot of the beliefs but Lent is the one thing I do every year. I take it as a small sacrifice. I try to remember not to eat meat on Fridays, but that's not always the case.

You do realize the original godzilla was born of later nuclear testing after WWII and not during the initial bomb drop, right? That was the origin back in the very first movie. 1954 is referenced for a reason, it's also about the Bikini Atol incident and always has been. The attack of godzilla itself is hiroshima and nagasaki, but they weren't the only component.

Personally, I think it's because people see writing (and other creative arts) as Not Real Work. It's Art, meaning something you should do because you're inspired and passionate about it, which is partly true but kind of misses out on the fact that you can't buy groceries with inspiration and passion. If artists can't pay their bills and buy what they need to live, they're not going to have the time to make Art.

It's highly illogical as well. You wouldn't go to the mechanic and expect them to replace your car transmission because they love what they do; you'd pay them because you know it's hard work that you cannot/will not do yourself. Yet the very same people who read books don't view the creation of those books in the same way.

Well, I definitely have different tastes to you. If I read a genderswap fic, I have to have male/female. If the base pairing is slash, that means I only read it with one character swapped.

I blame this on simple preferences: I'm straight, and I just don't get femmeslash, so swapping both sides of my slash pairing fails to appeal to me, while a het version of them will do just fine.

nayrt

Yes, you're absolutely correct. The point of Lent is not to give up something that's easy for you and requires no effort to go without. It's supposed to be a hardship. You're supposed to struggle with it a little. I think it's silly, but I'm not religious. I don't know why people would want to do this for religious reasons and then undermine the whole exercise, though.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
This is the kind of pithy absolutism that sounds good as long as you don't think critically about it. Writers want to get paid all the time. Go to any bookstore or library and you'll find lots of creations by people who expected to get paid for their writing.

Tbh I am way more interested in fem!Thorin which is rare as hell and which I think would be quite challenging and difficult to "get right" what with the character's personality and social status, whereas lots of time with fem! Bilbo fics I just find myself thinking, "Well you didn't even try at all," or, "Did you only do this to make them have babies?"

Dude this person can't even meet standard of basic human decency. This is blatantly entering scumbag territory.

They also need to be reported. They're breaking Tumblr's TOS in "Harassment" and "Privacy Violations".

Same. It irks me how it's never ever the "hot" character with more salivating fans who gets swapped, always the one people seem to think is effeminate to begin with.
