*nodnod* makes sense to me, OP.

What's that manga?

It's called Maka Maka

It always kind of weirds me out when one person in a pairing gets genderswapped and not the other. I've seen people's OTP lists that include "[X male character]/genderswap![Y male character]" rather than X/Y on its own, and it gives off a very "I'm not homophobic I just hate slash because it perverts the characters" sort of vibe.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I don't get people who write/read M/M as M/genderswapped!F exclusively. :/

F/F switched to M/F I've never seen, so.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agree. And it's sad that in my fandom experience both genderswap is kind of hard to find. Mostly people seem to want to turn the 'bottom' in fics into girls and then have a lot of het sex. :(

I'm more interested in scenarios where it's the typical top character who is swapped if it's gonna be just the one (f/f, either one). Not that I won't read it the other way, but if an author has a tendency to write weepy unrecognisable generukes, I doubt a swap will be all that different.

I've noticed that with Stiles in a lot of Sterek fic, but Teen Wolf and sort-of-but-it's-more-complicated-than-it-seems Thor are the only fandoms where I've noticed this pattern. My impression is that in Supernatural, Star Trek, MCU (excluding Loki fics), and Sherlock, it's pretty much a toss-up as to which character gets genderswapped. And in other fandoms like Harry Potter, there may be a most often genderswapped character (Harry himself, in that example), but he's not a bottom in 90+% of the fics featuring him (e.g., as Stiles is), so it's a completely different dynamic.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
YES. THIS ^^

Genderswapping just one character always seems like awkward self-insert territory to me (mostly because it's almost always half of a slash pairing who gets swapped).

I'm generally okay with any kind of genderswap. I guess sometimes it can come across as anti-slash when it creates a het pairing like some others were saying, but there are times when it turns a het pairing into a slash one too.

Maybe I just have a soft spot for that because my girlfriend and I look like Lily and a genderswapped James Potter.

I don't read much genderswap, but I won't read it if both characters aren't swapped. IDK how many times I've come across a fic that sounded good but only swapped one of the characters. Not sure why it bothers me so much, but I immediately lost interest.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I can't help but think your little disclaimer about "binary" was inserted specifically to start the wank you say you're trying to avoid.

I'm not a fan of genderswap because I like the characters the way they are, but if I do read it I want both to be swapped. I read mostly Teen Wolf fic these days and there are so many where Stiles is swapped. The tag will be 'alwaysagirl!Stiles' or 'cisgirl!Stiles'. I think I've come across maybe two fics where Derek was the one swapped and only one where both were swapped.

I don't read much genderswap fic but if I do I generally prefer both characters to be switched. The only exception is Thorin/fem!Bilbo which gives me all sorts of warm fuzzies(I ship regular Thorin/Bilbo too so it's not as if I prefer that over the slash version, I like both equally tbh).

I prefer both members of the couple to be genderswapped for various reasons (I love playing around with gender dynamics)
It weirds me out when they only gender swap one person

I think it's particularly odd when people only swap one member of a same-gender couple
I don't think it makes someone homophobic or anything, but when they create a bunch of fan content and most of it includes a lot of pairings having the guy-guy couple become a guy-girl couple, I can't help but wonder if they have problems with it or something...

I'm not a huge fan of genderswapped stuff, but I also prefer that both people in the pairing are swapped.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
a bit more broadly, i only really like genderswap fics where the entire cast is genderswapped. if it's just one or a few random characters, it seems a little weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
I DESPISE genderswapping. Ridiculous, insulting pastime.

I don't actually care for genderswapping in fic at all, but I think it's pretty fun to see genderswapped fanart.

Well, I definitely have different tastes to you. If I read a genderswap fic, I have to have male/female. If the base pairing is slash, that means I only read it with one character swapped.

I blame this on simple preferences: I'm straight, and I just don't get femmeslash, so swapping both sides of my slash pairing fails to appeal to me, while a het version of them will do just fine.

I'm different - I love it when I find a fic with only one switched, to see how the dynamic changes. Extra bonus points occur where one of the characters is canonically misogynistic and the friend is genderswapped.

But then again, I just really love most, if not all, genderswap.

One time, I saw someone justifying their need to write Rule 63 fics because "we needed more het representation in fandom" /smh

I'm actually not interested in genderswap unless it involves genderbending men into women (and leaving the women as is). All that Disney genderswap going around tumblr, and I'm like "where's all the femslash?"
