Yeah. Because men in Hollywood totally don't have body image issues and men in general don't have eating disorders and are totally never pressured by society to fit a certain mold of fit and good looking.

AYRT

Lol, no YOU are an ace Aussie M8! (Plus, you get points with me for being from Canberra!)

And yeah, it sucks about gay marriage. *Shakes fist at High Court*

Yeah, uh. I don't have any problem with her statements -especially the thing about her being "fat" - because in the context of the interviews, they do make sense. I just think the tumblrettes who went "OMG SHE'S SUCH A ROLE MODEL FOR BODY POSITIVITY" were the ones who took her statements out of context and are now surprised that other out-of-context-things she may or may not have said don't fit their picture of a plus-sized body positivity anti fat-shaming goddess anymore.

But aren't the Tsunami and Fukushima are still a bit too close, timeline wise, to be the background for a stupid killer lizard action movie? I actually think it would be pretty fucking disrespectful. But to each their own.

Re: Do you observe Lent? if so, what are you giving up this year?

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-03-05 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not usually. I'm not into organised religion or their practices but this year I've decided to give it a whirl. I enjoy easter and christmas, so why not take this opportunity to test my willpower?

So for lent, there will be no pizza for me.

I suppose it wouldn't really count if I didn't give up something I really really enjoy.

? I've never heard of doing that. What's the benefit? All my friends who play ME3 play it on Origin. Steam chat is nice, but sadly it doesn't change the fact that I still have to use Origin.

Re: Mass Effect 3 multiplayer

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-03-05 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've noticed that, and I've had a great time playing with 3 of my friends, but it's hard to get us all together at the same time. And it can be tricky playing with just 2 of us for...reasons. I have one friend who's really, really, REALLY good and tends to do the "take all the kills" thing. For a simplified explanation.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. It's dumb. I get giving someone a bonus for the killing blow, but you should get an assist at least somewhat proportional to the damage you did. And I've had kills "stolen" from me that way.

There are a couple characters I really, REALLY want to unlock, but at the moment I'm mostly interested in weapons, because I'm still using a shitty basic Mantis and Avenger and I want something a bit better...

No, no artist really ate a dead human baby.

Except they don't have to make that decision. Just write original fic and boom, all the potential monetization for their work that they could want. No one's saying the only way you should write is for free. They're saying if you must write in places where copyright is an issue, then you come in *knowing* its a hobby. It's like me bitching that no one pays me to work on my garden.

Maou-sama was god tier during the first half. The second one was boring.

Common sense.

I am not trying to be snarky in reply because I'm sure your comment is 100% well-intentioned but apologies if I do not succeed.

I am well aware of the traditions surrounding Lent. Because I was commenting to a thread specifically about Lent, I assumed most of the people reading and commenting to the thread would be familiar with Lenten disciplines, with the associated scriptures, and with related traditions. I didn't think I needed to demonstrate my knowledge in my comment.

I have huge huge huge issues with Christians in America framing themselves as martyrs (because of the way I was raised; see comment upthread; the kind of Christianity I grew up with continually frames American Christians as persecuted, as soldiers in some sort of battle they're fighting, etc.). I realize that Christianity in general has a storied history of meditation upon the suffering of Christ and saints and of framing earthly suffering in that context. I also realize that Christianity (and other religions too!) has a long history of valuing mortification of the flesh as an avenue to godliness. For me, those two traditions are inextricably bound up in what I see as abuses of those practices and make me deeply uncomfortable.

I also think that for many people Lent has become what many others have commented about here--a time to diet, a chance to try to give up that nasty nail biting habit, a moment to perfunctorily "give up" something you don't really give a shit about anyway because it's easy--rather than any form of prayer, penitence, or atonement.

I've also always heard Lent framed as an opportunity for transformation in the three parishes (across two states) where I've attended Mass.

While I still struggle with belief, I think a formal time of reflection, meditation, and transformation is a useful one. As I am pretty cool with ladies and gay people, it's always been clear to me that my stance on any particular issue is never going to jive completely with the church, at least not for now anyway, so if my understanding of Lent is grossly incorrect, I think I can live with that too.

Yeah, I grew up in and still live in the South, and there's plenty Catholics but Protestant Christianity dominates and it's bizarre how many Protestant Christians don't think Catholicism is Christianity. I was raised to believe Catholics aren't Christians. Bleck.

Glad my icon got you interested :P Canon-wise, Kanba's feelings on the matter are fairly canon but Himari's are more ambiguous. No one hooks up with their sister in the end, if that's what you're worried about (and there's a bit of a late-series twist regarding that relationship too, though another one kind of takes its place in a sense). It's a very surreal little show and there's some heavy stuff that goes on later. It never goes as far as Utena but it's still very Ikuhara.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. There's a fine line between a character dressing a certain way because it feels like their character would like to show off her body *for herself* and a character wearing practically nothing because boobs. Lately it feels like most things don't even try to *pretend* it's the former. And I think it's totally fine to feel a bit uncomfortable or unhappy about it.

Re: -incoherent screech of rage and want-

The solution is to talk to the writer in question beforehand and see if they'd be interested in your prompts, or if they'd rather write a different one of your prompts. Most of the charities aren't anonymous, so dropping the author a line is easy, and saves a lot of hassle.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No? It all goes to charity, like I said. I never personally see a dime.

They're the only reason I've gotten as far as I have, that's for sure. Which is not as far as I would ideally like, but still alive and independent in spite of all the BS. (And about to go sign the papers that will give me possession of an awesome car that I shouldn't have been able to afford given my salary and financial position, but. Intelligence = budgeting and tweaking said budget. Persistence = bargaining and refusing to give in to the easy answers.)

I have insomnia so I also never feel rested.

And we don't have a kettle but I hate when people don't mop up after a shower! Especially when you have socks on.
