Jennifer Lawrence

During an interview she called Christian Bale Fatman because he put on a lot of weight for the role he was in when she kissed him. It was basically I wanted kiss Batman and instead I got Fatman and tumblr exploded. That it was a joke is irrelevant because she fat shamed him and she's evil and must die.

1. People aren't perfect.
2. I don't think she's really trying to change as much as Tumblr and fans want people to think she is.
3. She is constantly saying inappropriate/funny comments and it's usually written off as her wacky charm, I don't know why something like this wouldn't fall under the same thing.

And yeah, celebrities do indeed say problematic shit all the time. The problem is that the press has been trying to sell us this image of her as this flawless person who is all pro-acceptance and pro-body positivity, only for her to do this bullshit afterward. Either own up to being an asshole or stop selling yourself as an alternative to Hollywood's bullshit.

I know her. Peripherally, but I did know her back in school. We interacted several times in friendly ways, and I can say that she's a genuinely nice and funny person, if a bit of a black hole (if she wasn't the center of attention at all times, she did not do well). But she was always so...slow to empathy. I doubt she was trying to actually poke fun at Christian Bale's weight or at fat people in general. She just seemed to have difficulty understanding that other people aren't sharing her thought process and that things that are innocent and funny and not at all malicious to those who know how she got there don't seem that way to everyone else. And that is the only thing I'll say about it.

I think tumblr has this propensity to put some actors (JLaw being one of them) on this high exemplary pedestal so if they say something that could potentially be taken badly, it becomes a bigger deal because it might shatter that actor's image in their eyes.

Also, like it or not, some people can wear extra weight and look great. Others just can't do that. I don't get the idea that Jennifer Lawrence is some kind of plus sized goddess because she doesn't look plump to me (but she is a goddess!) And Christian Bale did not look (that) good in American Hustle. He wasn't supposed to look good (but he's kinda ugliness resistant.) If they wanted him to look and play an attractive and chubby man, he could totally do that (because he's hot.) Christian is a shapeshifter (but he can never be completely unattractive. Go see the Machinists and you'll understand.)

Yeah, uh. I don't have any problem with her statements -especially the thing about her being "fat" - because in the context of the interviews, they do make sense. I just think the tumblrettes who went "OMG SHE'S SUCH A ROLE MODEL FOR BODY POSITIVITY" were the ones who took her statements out of context and are now surprised that other out-of-context-things she may or may not have said don't fit their picture of a plus-sized body positivity anti fat-shaming goddess anymore.

Honestly I heard that story and it doesn't really match up with an interview I actually saw with her where she was like "yeah, I'm basically playing a stereotype in this movie. BUT, I GET TO MAKE OUT WITH CHRISTIAN BALE!!!!"
