That's not whitewashing, though, is it? I thought whitewashing was specifically about erasing POCs by making them white or pretending they don't exist.
What's happening with the origin story is definitely fishy, but I wouldn't call it whitewashing.

"To whitewash is a metaphor meaning to gloss over or cover up vices, crimes or scandals or to exonerate by means of a perfunctory investigation or through biased presentation of data"

Is that the primary meaning of the word? Man, I had no idea. Seems like it's been misused a lot lately...

I think it has two separate meanings. The dictionary definition that Anon gave, and the tumblr definition, where they complain about western movies being remade with western actors.

Whitewash is a paint-like substance that lightens the color of things like wood, so the original metaphorical usage was a reference to covering up something dark (negative) in order to make it seem light (positive). The newer usage is a (clever IMO) pun referencing both meanings.

Man, I had the most facepalm-worthy moment the other day when someone messaged me to ask why I was talking about the Japanese's tendency to "whitewash" their own history when it has nothing to do with race. And here you are.

Are you accusing me of sending you that message? I can assure you I had nothing to do with that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
The short answer is no. That is not what I meant.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but that's totally different from the meaning of "whitewashing" in the fandom SJ sense.
