Um. What.

I'm a big proponent of gender-neutral language, to the point where I'm sure I get plenty of eye-rolling behind my back. If I'm in a bad mood, I'll snipe at people I know for saying "freshmen". So the fact that I think that's ridiculous is probably saying something.

We call them first-years at my school (women's college).

Is everyone else second years, etc or do you single out first years because "men" is in the word?

It's just first-years; the rest are sophomores, juniors and seniors, like usual. I've never heard anyone explicitly say that it's because the word has "men" in it, but I mean, it makes sense.
