Spelling "women" as "womxn."

[personal profile] chardmonster 2014-03-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a thing now? I was grading a student's paper and thought it was a typo, so I circled it. I then saw it again, circled it, then googled.

Apparently it's a thing.

This is the stupidest thing. Stop doing it.

First womyn, then womxn. I predict womwn will be next.

At least you can pronounce womyn. I'm trying to say "womxn" aloud and it's not going well.

Don't forget 'wimmin'. Gotta find a way to leave out that horrible, horrible 'men' part of the word.

(A lot of the neo-pagans we knew two decades ago did this, and it was in a lot of pagan books and things, too.)

Chard, be honest with your feelings. Why are Womens Studies students just so tremendousy awful. Right up there with Business and Computer Science in the terrible human being stakes?

That's ridiculous. Is there only one form for both singular and plural? Lazy.

Um. What.

I'm a big proponent of gender-neutral language, to the point where I'm sure I get plenty of eye-rolling behind my back. If I'm in a bad mood, I'll snipe at people I know for saying "freshmen". So the fact that I think that's ridiculous is probably saying something.

Sounds like a Superman villain or something. I don't understand the point of it (and knowing these things, I probably don't care to know either), but I can't fathom why a student would use it on an actual essay/test/whatever.

I have not seen it with an x before. That doesn't even make sense. That's just stupid. An x does not make the sound you need nor does it represent anything you want it to when you add it to yourself.

I have seen womyn though. I think it'd stupid but if you do it whatever, I'm not gonna say anything. I also think it's far less stupid than womxn because at least y makes the right fucking sound.

This has been a thing since forever. I first encountered it at sleep away camp when I was 9. Which was 18 years ago. It was stupid then, it's stupid now, and it's going to be stupid in the future.

Maybe they started with "womyn", then suddenly realized Y is a male chromosome so they changed the Y to an X.

Any time I see someone use a made-up gender neutral term I experience a profound urge to start referring to lady-type persons (of which I am one) as "chicks" or "broads" out of sheer contrary irritation.
