Always willing to answer awkward cultural questions. Anything in particular about America that you just NEED to understand right now? :P

Yes. Do you really have insurance for everything? Can you just walk into a store and buy a gun? What the hell is flossing?

Insurance: for the biggest things. Health, home, car. Mainly because the government doesn't provide much protection for disasters and other crises.

Guns: I don't know personally because I have no interest, but I think there's usually (or at least often?) a waiting period. And yes, they're sold at Walmart but not at other general/non-sporting goods stores.

Flossing: You don't have flossing? Why didn't I know this? You take a piece of wax-coated thread and slide it between your teeth, it pulls out bits of food that brushing misses, also keeps your gums healthy.

I've never heard of flossing until I 'heard' Americans talking about it on the internet. It's not really a thing here as far as I know. We just brush our teeth.

Interesting! Yeah "flossing regularly" is always a thing over here. A lot of people do and a lot of people don't but pretty much everyone agrees they should.

I've had cavities I wouldn't have had if I flossed more. They formed between some of my back teeth. Flossing really helps get stuff out from between your teeth. I brush really thoroughly and still get stuff coming out on the floss or sometimes even still visible between my front teeth. I'd love to dismiss it as an American dental vanity thing, but I have fillings that prove otherwise.

Not even from dentists? I'm just wondering because every dentist I've been to (in various countries) have always mentioned flossing.

On the guns it depends on the state and the type of gun and they do a background check but yes actually one time my dad walked into Walmart and came out with a hunting rifle. I do not think they would let me buy a gun right away, but I've never tried nor would I.

Insurance: Home - does not include Flood insurance, which is a separate thing you have to buy if you want it. Car - You can't drive without insurance! Health is now required. Dental is different than health. Eye insurance is different than health. Pet insurance is a thing, too. So yeah I guess we do.

A French teacher I had told me that French children are always very well dressed, is that true? How do you feel about this video? Do you ever get your flag confused with Russia's?

Well I know that when I was a kid I wasn't exactly what you'd call fashionable, but that was the 90s so... Anyway, I think generally children here are dressed in more muted and darker colours than American children.

Ah, I've seen this video! It's funny, although I don't see what the big deal is about 'ananas'. It's the word for 'pineapple' in almost every language except English.

No our flag is never confused with Russia's, or with any other country's as far as I know. It's quite recognisable, I think.

I have just walked into a store and bought a gun, multiple times. They have an instant background-check system, and my state doesn't mandate a waiting period. You fill out a form, pay a modest fee to cover the check, they run your information against a database, and if there's no reason you shouldn't have a gun, you just buy the gun.

More recently, though, I've gotten guns via internet sites such as gunbroker.com, via the following process: I order the gun and send payment to the seller, and they ship it to someone in my area who's a federally licensed firearms dealer. I meet that person, fill out the same form, pay the same fee, they check me against the same database, and if I'm clean, they turn the gun over to me.

The latter is handy for all the reasons that buying online is always handy. Shopping around for the best price or a special discount, seeing a larger selection than a single store could carry, and being able to find obscure models or collector's items that you'd NEVER be able to track down otherwise. Plus, the licensed transfer dealer in my area also works as a gunsmith, so I'd be going to him anyway when I need some work done.

In theory, there's insurance for everything (mostly in that there are some catch-all forms of insurance that can be applied extremely broadly). More concretely, insurance is for things that are either extremely expensive, prone to cause lawsuits, or both.

In some places, yes, you can just walk into a store and buy a gun, though with a few rare exceptions, no where is completely instantaneous (as far as I know). There DOES have to be a background check done (either right then or done ahead of time, re: license), and most often there's a waiting period, ranging anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Gun laws vary dramatically from state to state, county to county, even city to city (i.e. mine has age limits on certain types of guns and ammunition). And of course, there are loopholes and such (i.e. get someone else to buy a gun for you, buy the mostly-unregulated parts and put the gun together yourself, etc.)

Flossing = taking a waxed thread and running it between your teeth, to push out any tiny food detritus that could settle down between them and cause long-term damage. There is some debate about how often to do this (i.e. the 'ideal' is to do so every day, but for a lot of people that kind of regularity can cause gum damage in the long run). Some people do it every day, some people only do it once or twice in the week leading up to their visit to the dentist's office.
