Just popping in to say something I haven't seen mentioned yet and that never seems to get mentioned.

The artist/writers' TIME is of value. It's not just about supplies like pencils, paints, notebooks, canvases, computers, or programs. I do take commissions, and you aren't paying me for my computer or the word processing programs I use. You are paying for my time and effort to create something tailor-made for you, time and effort that I would spend doing something else, even writing for myself, if you weren't paying me to do it for you.

Just food for thought, because sometimes the entitlement of 'authors should write whatever I want for free' really gets under the skin. My time is valuable to me, so if you want something special, pay me, cuz as the OP says here, money is certainly a motivator.

THIS.

When you commission fanart from people you're not just paying for supplies. Like, if it was that easy go out and buy some damn pencils and paper and draw it yourself-OH WAIT. YOU'RE COMMISSIONING THE PERSON BECAUSE YOU DONT HAVE THE SKILL/PATIENCE TO DO IT YOURSELF. You're paying the person for their skills and time! Same for fanfic writers. If someone wants to charge for putting their time and effort into something they should be allowed to. If you don't like it, go read something somewhere else; don't give them shit for wanting to be paid for putting hard work into something.
