It never made sense how fan artists can charge for their work but fic writers can't. I want to cash in on the creative endeavors of others, dammit!

Now that you mention it, it *doesn't* make a lot of sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
There was wank here not too long about this and everyone was crying that artists have to pay for supplies and writers don't. That's not the case but it's the common perception.

there have been times where i thought i'd be willing to throw money at someone, just so they would write the fic ideas that i am too lazy or untalented to do. it seems strange that paying for a good fic isn't as common as paying for a piece of fan art.

They're licensing more all the time.

You don't HAVE to write fanfic, you know.

But perhaps you could motivate yourself by writing for someone, or for a competition - if only for the fame?

makes sense to me

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that sounds crazy at all. I definitely have more motivation when it's a legit job, not to mention that you wouldn't have to squeeze it in and could devote a lot more time and attention to your writing.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-03-05 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
If the only way you can motivate yourself to write is if you were able to get paid for it, then it's not writing you wanna do. You just wanna make money.

I switched from writing 90 percent fanfic to writing 90 percent original fiction around the end of 2012.

In some ways, I'm happier than ever, in other ways it's harder. The community isn't as supportive of less than perfect efforts, so you have to learn a lot quickly. But, if you can learn, and write a lot, and find your audience, you can make some money.

The money is really, really nice when you're poor. I also love the ability to write exactly the story I want to tell about exactly the characters I want to write. I don't have to fit into fandoms where I've so often felt like I wasn't wanted if I didn't write the exactly tropes or kinks that the important people liked or wanted.

They both have benefits. They both have costs. But honestly, if you're not motivated to write fanfic, you're not going to be motivated to write original. It takes longer (more editing required, more research and sometimes cost, etc.), and the first time you get slapped by a couple of one-stars because someone doesn't like your genre, or ignored, or read a really terrible review from someone who didn't even bother to read more than a sample of your story, or have your work pirated...yeah.

You really have to be motivated from inside. Money IS nice. Money helps us survive the real world. But it can't be everything, because there are always easier ways to get money. :)

Can we please, please, please make this a thing? Because seriously, there are so many fics I want to read and am too lazy to write, that I would definitely pay for. Yes, I know it's incredibly illegal but I torrent illegally, too. Whose firstborn do I have to kill to get this?! Would having it be an illustrated story make it better? What if I called it ghostwriting or a collaborative effort since I'm supplying the premise and the plot? Just...whose bed do I have to leave the horse head in?

Sorry, I just get really enthusiastic over the prospect of fic that is to my taste.

Since there are a lot of people in this thread talking about how they would pay money for fic - out of curiosity, how much would you pay an author you like to write a fic for you? Depending on the length of the fic, I suppose?

I don't need the money for my fic personally, but I like being commissioned. I like the idea that my writing in particular, combined with a general plot/trope/idea, is something people want to pay for. It's a nice little ego boost, and it hurts exactly no one.

So...I get it.

Why do you think people with 9-5 jobs aren't asked to do stuff for free, and/or vastly beneath the value of their actual work?

Also, I do write fiction professionally (as well as fanfic), and almost nobody makes enough money to live on that way. It's a nice bonus but it works out to something like a maximum of $1.15/hour after 10 years of sales!

A lot of people would be prolific in a lot of things if they could make money from it. Unfortunately, that's not how the world works. You need to make your own motivation, OP - or start writing original fiction and sending it off to paying zines.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think the OP is "only" interested in the money, but... at least you know that if someone buys your fic, it's because they actively enjoy your writing enough to part with some dosh. That's a high tribute in this society.

Fandom culture is pretty crap at voicing appreciation of fan writers these days. Even a drive-by anonymous kudos is considered something they should be grateful for.

So yeah, I totally get it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's always a difference between "selling fanwork you made" and "being commissioned to create fanwork". The first one is illegal where I live, but I guess you could find a loophole with the second because you get paid for the work/time you put into it and not just for selling copyrighted material you already created.

So getting paid by people for showing them a fanfic you already wrote? No.
Getting commissioned by people to write that one fanfic they want to read? Yes.

And I've actually seen a lot of people do fanfic commissions. I don't see how that is such a revolutionary new concept?

You'd think that, but even though I've done commissions before, the motivation will drop, even with the expectation of money.

And it's due in part because you don't wanna take too long, which can be a rush thing going on, the art idea may be bleh and you don't wanna draw it, but have to, and various other things that can get in the way and make the motivation go down.

Money can be a great motivator!! But the responsibility that goes with it can dampen it severely.

Just popping in to say something I haven't seen mentioned yet and that never seems to get mentioned.

The artist/writers' TIME is of value. It's not just about supplies like pencils, paints, notebooks, canvases, computers, or programs. I do take commissions, and you aren't paying me for my computer or the word processing programs I use. You are paying for my time and effort to create something tailor-made for you, time and effort that I would spend doing something else, even writing for myself, if you weren't paying me to do it for you.

Just food for thought, because sometimes the entitlement of 'authors should write whatever I want for free' really gets under the skin. My time is valuable to me, so if you want something special, pay me, cuz as the OP says here, money is certainly a motivator.
