I don't think people who say it's too dense or too flowery to read actually mean that; it's just that the writing style is so completely different than stuff written in the last twenty years that it puts a lot of people off. And since those are the most common complaints about text from old literature, people just claim that. I say this as somebody who vastly prefers the written canon to all but two live-action adaptations.

But... it isn't actually that different. I can read the excerpt in the secret and it's not full of words I've never seen or syntax that's completely unfamiliar to me.

That's the point. TV fans are complaining Canon is too difficult too Victorian etc. but they've never actually read word one of the stories. I have even seen the Tumblr idiots bragging about how they'll never read Canon, they have zero interest in Canon, the only thing they're interested in and squee about is the delusional fanon(s) in their heads.
