I understand that, yeah, it was a pretty decent portrayal of a transwoman during the the 80's,

but I feel like they never really addressed it so the audience could understand that, yes, Rayon is a woman.
As I've said, someone who doesn't really understand what trangender people are might just believe that Rayon's a drag queen / a really flamboyant gay man. There's also the fact that in a majority of marketing for the movie never mentions that Rayon's transgender.

I also have some problems with Jared's acceptance speech due to the fact that he never addressed that he played a transgender person (and kept it as vague as fucking possible) There are literally dozens of 'flamboyant gay men who mostly make sassy comments and make the straight protagonist's life better' characters (which, Rayon unfortunately fits sans the gay man part) Having a character who is trans would be a good move representation wise, but when you literally never even mention it A. half of the audience will never realize it, so it's fucking useless B. if you're 'so progressive' why do you have a problem with talking about it?

I also was talking with one of my friends a while back (who happens to be a FTM trans man) who also had similar problems with it
I still thought it was an okay/good movie

I can appreciate your point of view, but it's not the movie's job to convince people that Rayon is a woman. And even if it took up that endeavor, there will always be people who believe she isn't because she was born with a penis.

Thing is presumably they based it on how people addressed the person IRL. Lots of the people are still around, and haven't been saying that it's all wrong. They've criticised the film for portraying Matthew M's character as much more vile than he apparently was, but I've heard nothing about Rayon being incorrectly portrayed. Although I know some of the characters are composite.

I didn't actually like the film TBH, felt they were all horrible. But I didn't feel bothered by his portrayal.

Rayon was invented for the film, not based on an actual historical figure.
