Rayon is a pretty great adopted name. It's ridiculous but believably ridiculous.

the pronoun thing was so strange and annoying. i mean, i suppose you could assume rayon was still more comfortable with he/him and that's why there was never any correction. but mostly it just felt like a giant fuck up. really it would have been nice to know more about them in general.

This is my take on it. I have a friend whose trans but still uses the pronouns associated with the gender he was assigned at birth because he doesn't want to be switching back and forth all the time depending on if the people talking to/about him know (and can safely be told) he's a woman or not. This kind of thing happens. But I have to know that something like that is going on or I'm going to wonder when someone is being called by the wrong pronouns.

Someone want to give a bit of background?

I haven't seen this film, but I assume he did something right if he got an Oscar for it.

But, a few things:

- something can be good without being politically correct or even accommodating.
- It's really hard to retroactively know how someone would react. Also, everyone differs. But, having grown up in the 80's and 90's, I can tell you that a shitton has changed about the views on trans people in the last 5-10 years. I still recall this kid being happy to call Dana International "it" and it wasn't THAT long ago.

Eh, it's not like the Oscars are governed by people that care overly much about the lives of people that aren't them (i.e. rich white guys). That said, I think that the fact that it's second in the 80s probably explains a lot. I'm surprised anyone called her 'she' at all.

True, but I've seen Leto act before (not in this role) and I think he's rather good. What I mean is: I believe it's a great acting performance.

But there's this thing where Hollywood tends to have a boner for actors who are actually willing to change themselves physically for a certain part, I realize.

But I digress - I actually meant to say something can be brilliantly acted without actually being representative or true to reality.

The problem, as far as I heard, is that while it's based on a true story, Rayon's character is actually fictional.

Yes. And it doesn't always make sense for a character to be mindful of things like that.

This. *Maybe* Dallas Buyers Club didn't do a "good job" of portraying today's standard on transgender people, but I found it quite accurate for the time it was depicting.

Thank you so much for point #2. It's so aggravating seeing kids ripping apart canons for being fairly insensitive by the standards of today, when at the time we couldn't believe the risks creators were taking by being so bold. It's like, fuck, you weren't even alive back then.

Thing to consider is, this takes place in the 80's. A character like Rayon would have likely been considered by others to simply be a drag queen rather than a transperson (especially since IIRC gender reassignment surgeries/hormone treatments weren't widely known about/available at that time and alot of shrinks would have just gone with the 'oh you are just gay' route) and Rayon might have been afraid to correct the pronoun usage for fear of being on the recieving end of a much more violent reaction from some (especially since this is set in Texas).

especially since IIRC gender reassignment surgeries/hormone treatments weren't widely known about/available [in the 80s]

While trans folks wouldn't be treated the same way as today, and SRS was not easy to get, it was known - Renee Richards was used as offhand references on television, for instance...not as obscure trivia, or even simply as an athlete, but as a well-known transwoman.

I thought this character was supposed to be a man as well.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that, yeah, it was a pretty decent portrayal of a transwoman during the the 80's,

but I feel like they never really addressed it so the audience could understand that, yes, Rayon is a woman.
As I've said, someone who doesn't really understand what trangender people are might just believe that Rayon's a drag queen / a really flamboyant gay man. There's also the fact that in a majority of marketing for the movie never mentions that Rayon's transgender.

I also have some problems with Jared's acceptance speech due to the fact that he never addressed that he played a transgender person (and kept it as vague as fucking possible) There are literally dozens of 'flamboyant gay men who mostly make sassy comments and make the straight protagonist's life better' characters (which, Rayon unfortunately fits sans the gay man part) Having a character who is trans would be a good move representation wise, but when you literally never even mention it A. half of the audience will never realize it, so it's fucking useless B. if you're 'so progressive' why do you have a problem with talking about it?

I also was talking with one of my friends a while back (who happens to be a FTM trans man) who also had similar problems with it
I still thought it was an okay/good movie

I can appreciate your point of view, but it's not the movie's job to convince people that Rayon is a woman. And even if it took up that endeavor, there will always be people who believe she isn't because she was born with a penis.

Thing is presumably they based it on how people addressed the person IRL. Lots of the people are still around, and haven't been saying that it's all wrong. They've criticised the film for portraying Matthew M's character as much more vile than he apparently was, but I've heard nothing about Rayon being incorrectly portrayed. Although I know some of the characters are composite.

I didn't actually like the film TBH, felt they were all horrible. But I didn't feel bothered by his portrayal.

Re: OP

Rayon was invented for the film, not based on an actual historical figure.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Preach!
Although I haven't seen the movie. Although I'm sure there was a transgender involved helping with the role. They just looked over some minor details.
