I haven't seen this film, but I assume he did something right if he got an Oscar for it.

But, a few things:

- something can be good without being politically correct or even accommodating.
- It's really hard to retroactively know how someone would react. Also, everyone differs. But, having grown up in the 80's and 90's, I can tell you that a shitton has changed about the views on trans people in the last 5-10 years. I still recall this kid being happy to call Dana International "it" and it wasn't THAT long ago.

Eh, it's not like the Oscars are governed by people that care overly much about the lives of people that aren't them (i.e. rich white guys). That said, I think that the fact that it's second in the 80s probably explains a lot. I'm surprised anyone called her 'she' at all.

True, but I've seen Leto act before (not in this role) and I think he's rather good. What I mean is: I believe it's a great acting performance.

But there's this thing where Hollywood tends to have a boner for actors who are actually willing to change themselves physically for a certain part, I realize.

But I digress - I actually meant to say something can be brilliantly acted without actually being representative or true to reality.

The problem, as far as I heard, is that while it's based on a true story, Rayon's character is actually fictional.

Yes. And it doesn't always make sense for a character to be mindful of things like that.

This. *Maybe* Dallas Buyers Club didn't do a "good job" of portraying today's standard on transgender people, but I found it quite accurate for the time it was depicting.

Thank you so much for point #2. It's so aggravating seeing kids ripping apart canons for being fairly insensitive by the standards of today, when at the time we couldn't believe the risks creators were taking by being so bold. It's like, fuck, you weren't even alive back then.
