I'm sure someone will come in with the more precise details, but basically, Watson gets engaged to Mary Morstan at the end of The Sign of Four, and subsequently marries her and moves in with her. And there's a bunch of adventures where Watson's like "Oh, I was living with my wife and I totally missed my old bud Sherlock Holmes so I went and hung out with him and we solved this case", or whatever - basically a lot of stories where it's indicated that Mary and Watson are married and living together. But then at some point... I believe that it says somewhere that she dies, but I don't recall for sure, but at any rate, at some point Watson and Holmes are just living together again, so therefore Watson is single. However, there's also further references to Watson being married after that takes place! So it's all a big muddle.
