Could they really do anything with OP's PIN though? There's no way of knowing who it even belongs to.

I guess Case has the IP address of the secret poster, so if he really wanted to look up their identifying information he probably could... but I trust him more than that?

IP addresses don't work that way. Assuming OP posted from home, all Case would be able to find would be which access provider they were using and where the server that assigned their address is located. (Which might not be where they actually live.)

Computer Science graduate here... I'm going to say it's too long a bow given the circumstances here.

Popular ideas of hackers as magical are bullshit. Hackers look for opportunity and exploit it, they don't just magically open any door they find if they just try hard enough/are smart enough.
