I want to come out to my gaming group, but I also don't want to be that guy who randomly draws attention to it and informs everybody that he's gay when nobody asked.

Can you wait until there happens to be a conversations that naturally leads to this?

Anything to do with sexuality hasn't come up in... over a year now. I don't know what the chances are.

Do you have a SO or go on dates? Mention that you have one.

Lol, that'd be a great idea if I had one. Mentioning I'm single and interested in men doesn't have quite the same ring to it...

Do they sometimes talk about girlfriends, girls they fancy? Maybe game characters they fancy? Politics even?

On the other hand: It sounds sort of chill to have a friend group that's not obsessed with sex.

Some of them are married, others I have no clue about. Other than people talking about their wives/husbands, it doesn't much come up, and it would be unimaginably awkward to use someone else's spouse as a conversation tangent for this...

I have to say, it's sometimes FANTASTIC that nobody cares or is even interested and just wants to game. It's not how they'd react afraid of, though. I just don't want to be that gay guy that needs everybody to know, argh.

Obviously this isn't one of those games where you all try to have sex with some NPC chesty elf, but could you make your character be gay in some situation and use that as the reason to drop it? "Hey, I'm gay, so I figured Granitebeard is gay" *shrug*

Surely there's some character who your character could hit on.

I came out to my cousin when she was talking about how hot Chris Evans is in the Avengers and I said that Scarlett Johansson was more my type. It wasn't a big deal; the conversation just moved on like usual.

Surprisingly, no. We're an older group, everyone is over 30-35 except me, some have spouses and kids... so it's a little awkward for anyone to talk about how hot an actor is. I can't remember a time it's ever come up.

Yeah, just say it without making a big deal about it. If they're reasonably mature I think they'll be able to handle it. IMO

I actually don't think bringing up a personal topic like coming out to a bunch of friends makes you "that guy who randomly draws attention" or is really a bad thing. I mean they're your friends right? Just be like "Hey guys I've been wanting to say something, not a big deal but wanted you to know" or something like that.

I think most folks nowadays would be cool with that. Or, if you want to play it super-casual, just drop in something like "My boyfriend said the funniest thing yesterday" or "My boyfriend liked that movie" or whatever. Or "A guy I dated" if you're not currently with anyone.

Does your group do the thing where your characters hit on NPCs/have romantic relationships or whatever? Because if so, I can definitely think of less organic and terrible ways to come out than if your paladin starts flirting with the bartender instead of the tavern wenches.

I'm really kind of sick of the "Cause I'm Happy" song.

I never liked the song. To me, it's boring. Am I evil? I just don't think it's an interesting song. It's like elevator music.

If you don't want to be "that gay guy that needs everybody to know" and... forgive me, but you seem a bit impatient to tell them rather than letting it happen naturally, so why DO you want them to know? Either you're going to have to manufacture a somewhat natural sounding situation where your sexuality comes up, or you make the awkward announcement you said you don't want to make.

The reality of it is, you ARE that guy who wants to inform everyone even though nobody's asked. There's nothing wrong with that! But there's also no point in pretending you don't want to do what you very obviously want to do, which is tell your friends even though they haven't asked you about it.

Uh, okay. I'm 36 and married, not dead. My friends and I regularly mention actors we find attractive. We don't necessarily do it in a juvenile way ("hur hur lookit the fine ass on that one"), it's just casual or even silly, the way friends goof around. Old married people with kids can have friends who goof around, it's allowed.

Or since you mentioned you're not currently with anyone, this seems like a great opportunity to ask your friends if they know a hot male geek they could set you up with because you're sick of going to the movies by yourself/eating out a single diner/whatever. Whether they do or don't, hey, problem solved! Seriously, good luck OP, and don't overthink this.
