Coffee Machine!

[personal profile] caerbannog 2014-03-08 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'm gonna go buy this when my hair is dry and painkillers have kicked in:

http://www.myer.com.au/shop/mystore/offers/the-word-on-the-street%3A-electrical/kitchen-appliances-211063--1/au-breville-bes250-cafe-venezia-d-19347#

Dunno anything about coffee machines but it looks okay to me? Probably have a better idea after I get there and poke at it.

I really don't want any of the pod ones, too wasteful and expensive.

Forgot my question: What kind of machines do you guys have if you have any? Got any little coffee machine tricks and hints? Like varying the coffee etc?

I lover my French press. Not sure I'll ever go back to a drip machine.

Holy shit, that is an expensive coffee machine. I hope it makes super crazy delicious coffee for you. Good luck with the poking!

Alas, I have no kitchen machines. But I often drool over food processors and blenders.

It's my special treat to myself u_u; It's still the cheaper end but it's also the only coffee machine that isn't one of those pod things? Not mentioned on the page is a 20% sale for only today so it will hopefully be cheaper! *_*

Someone once told me he puts a little bit of cardamom in with his coffee grounds for extra flavor. I have never tried it because I have a Keurig, but as a lover of cardamom I swooned at the thought.

Didn't know what that was so I looked it up and I still don't recognise it so I may have to hunt the herb isle because now I'm curious.

Cardamom is fascinating and hard to describe. It's sweet-spicy, a bit in the way that cinnamon is, but it's a much "brighter" flavor, with an almost citrusy touch to it.

I have a French presse that I use for coffee and tea. My room mate has one of those Tassimo abominations and I absolutely fucking can't stand it.

My favorite is just a good old funnel with paper, but I don't like to create unnecessary waste, so the French presse is the next best thing.

It's an espresso machine and Brevilles are great machines! I have an older model and it's served me faithfully for 10 years. The one you've picked out has really good specs!

Little tips/tricks:
Any coffee is fine for making espresso. You can buy ground coffee and it works just as well as whole espresso beans. Less mess too and you don't have to buy a grinder or clean the infernal thing.

It's ok to add sugar to your espresso no matter what coffee snobs might say differently.

You can buy syrups from Starbucks and make their drinks (even the cold ones!) using their official recipes:
http://www.starbucksfs.com/Recipes/

Go cheap for espresso shot glasses (2 oz glasses) or just use a teacup or small mug or glass. If you measure out 2 oz in a measuring cup and pour it into the mug or whatever, you can get an idea of what 2 oz looks like in that mug/glass. You will then also want to measure out what 4 oz looks like (most common espresso serving size). I use a mug and I marked the 2 and 4 oz levels with a Sharpie on the inside.

Spring for a metal tamper because the plastic ones aren't worth it. Amazon has some good ones for cheap. I am perfectly happy with this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Espresso-Tamper-Sizes-Alloy-Coffee/dp/B0001XRNEM

If you aren't confident about steaming milk, this two pitcher set with thermometer is a great deal.
http://www.amazon.com/Stainless-Frothing-Pitcher-Pitchers-Thermometer/dp/B00DCK550K
If you just want one pitcher and no thermometer, I recommend still getting one of the Update brand. Much better quality than the price indicates. Some recent reviews had me worried when I wanted to buy a different size pitcher but I got it anyways and it was very good quality.

If you have very hard water where you live, it will save you money in the long run to use distilled/bottled water in your machine.

Pay close attention to the instructions for descaling! Except disregard the part where it says you HAVE to use the Breville brand tablets because they are terrible and never desolve all the way (neither do any other brand tablets we have tried). I like Urnex brand best because it's powder and desolves very fast (http://www.amazon.com/Espresso-Tamper-Sizes-Alloy-Coffee/dp/B0001XRNEM). I last got them in early October and still have a box left (I descale every month), so it isn't as expensive as it looks. Of course you can get other brands, but I recommend staying away from deLognhi eco solution. It didn't work for us at all. We actually had better luck with Borax but then had to flush the machine over a dozen times :(

That's all I can think of for now, but I'm happy to answer questions if you have any. I check FS sporadically between now and the next 4 or 5 hours and usually once or twice the next day, even after the new post goes up.

I've got it now! The first coffee ever by it was pretty good! Used the instruction booklet all the way through it. It's so gorgeous!!! I want to marry it.

Cna't think of any questions yet but that's cause I'm about to run out again.

But how have I lived without this machine before omfg. I am buying so many flavours when I go to the store!

It came with two metal tampers of different sizes! And a metal cup and measuring spoon and oh god I've had too much coffeee but so so worth it.
